Coventry City<\/a> have released their plan to build a new stadium in an attempt to return to the city. The Sky Blues left the Ricoh Arena in 2019 after a dispute between the club’s owners, Sisu, and the stadium owners.<\/p>\n

Coventry City Unveil Plans to Build New Stadium to Return Home<\/h2>\n

A Successful Season Away<\/h3>\n

In plans released this morning, City unveiled the plot to build the stadium in a deal with the University of Warwick. They intend to build the new stadium in the south-east of Coventry city centre on land owned by the University.<\/p>\n

Coventry were forced out of the Ricoh Arena for the second time last year. They agreed a deal with Birmingham City<\/a> to play their home games at St Andrews for the 2019\/20 season. While the season has ended, the deal is expected to continue until Coventry finalises their new home.<\/p>\n

Despite the change of atmosphere, St Andrew’s proved a comfortable place for the Sky Blues. They cantered to the League One<\/a> title, winning over half their league games before the curtailment of the campaign. They finished five points above Rotherham in second, and seven points above Oxford United in third. At St Andrew’s, they won 11 of their 17 games, losing just once.<\/p>\n

Heading Back Home<\/h3>\n

The joint statement between the club and the University proudly declares that all financial aspects of the stadium are the responsibility of Coventry City. This is particularly important as this provides security for Coventry. They will no longer be at risk of eviction from landlords.<\/p>\n

“The club will own and be entirely responsible for the cost of the stadium and its operation; equally, the Club will receive all stadium revenues it generates,” the joint statement reads<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Both the University and the club are committed to a visionary, environmentally-friendly stadium in terms of materials, energy, noise, building and of course access. We envision supporters arriving at the stadium through a new light rail station at the ground running alongside a new link road.”<\/p>\n
