League Two club Walsall<\/a> are in talks with experienced midfielder Danny Guthrie<\/a> over a new contract, according to Liam Keen of the Express & Star<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saddlers Look to Boost Their Ranks for the New Season<\/h3>\n

The 33-year-old is understood to have been one of five Walsall players who were offered a contract extension in June.<\/p>\n

However, of the quintet, which included young players such as Callum Cockerill-Mollett<\/a> and Tom Leak<\/a>, Guthrie is the only one yet to sign on for the 2020\/21 campaign.<\/p>\n

The former Newcastle United<\/a> man signed for the Saddlers last July after two years away from English football and featured in 28 matches for the West Midlands side last season.<\/p>\n

He chipped in with one goal and two assists as Darrell Clarke\u2019s men finished in 12th<\/sup> position in the fourth-tier on points per game, after recovering from a disappointing first few months.<\/p>\n

Guthrie was unable to feature in a number of matches due to injury, yet Walsall are evidently very keen to keep someone of his know-how at the Banks\u2019 Stadium.<\/p>\n

An Accomplished Professional<\/h3>\n

Guthrie provides the Saddlers with a level of experience which is very difficult to come by in League Two.<\/p>\n

He has played Premier League<\/a> football for four different clubs during his career and is therefore understandably the sort of midfield option Walsall want to keep within their first-team squad.<\/p>\n

Having progressed through Liverpool<\/a>\u2019s academy, Guthrie played seven times in all competitions for the Reds, including making his first professional start against Turkish outfit Galatasaray in the Champions League<\/a> in December 2006, at the age of 19.<\/p>\n

After spending time out on loan at Southampton<\/a> and Bolton Wanderers<\/a>, he joined Newcastle. Across four years in the North East, the Shrewsbury-born midfielder made 104 appearances in total and played a particularly key role as the Magpies earned promotion back to the Premier League in 2009\/10.<\/p>\n

From there he moved on to Reading<\/a>, who suffered relegation to the Championship at the end of Guthrie\u2019s first season at the club. He also represented Fulham<\/a>\u00a0and Blackburn Rovers<\/a> in the second-tier.<\/p>\n
