Cambridge United<\/a> have moved to appoint ex-Wycombe Wanderers<\/a> and Aldershot Town<\/a> boss Gary Waddock as their new assistant head coach.<\/p>\n

Coaching Career<\/h3>\n

The 58-year-old will become the assistant to first-team head coach Mark Bonner at the League Two<\/a> side.<\/p>\n

The U’s were in 16th position when the EFL halted the season earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Waddock has had an illustrious career, racking up over 500 career appearances for six clubs. The ex-Republic of Ireland international was also capped 21 times for his country during his playing days.<\/p>\n

He then moved into management, where he has had similar success, achieving promotion from both the National League and League Two with Aldershot Town and Wycombe respectively.<\/p>\n

Waddock Excited to Join United<\/h3>\n

Waddock spoke of his excitement to be working with head coach Mark Bonner.<\/p>\n

The Irishman told the club website<\/a>: “Speaking to Mark [Bonner], I like his ideas and I’m excited about what he wants to do with the team to take the Club forward.”<\/p>\n

Bonner has been head coach since Colin Calderwood left the club in January<\/a>. The 34-year-old signed a deal in March to keep him at the helm until the summer of 2022.<\/p>\n

“Mark’s an extremely enthusiastic young coach with great ideas, and I feel with the experience that I’ve gained over my career, both playing and in different coaching roles, we can be a very good match for each other.<\/p>\n

“His thinking is very much aligned with the ideas I have, and I believe I can help Mark to the benefit of everybody at the Club,” Waddock added.<\/p>\n

The club’s Head of Football Ben Strang also cited Waddock’s experience as being key to his appointment.<\/p>\n

“It was felt that we needed to support Mark with a high calibre Assistant Head Coach, in his first Head Coach role.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re confident that Gary will offer terrific value and experience to our staff,” he told the club.<\/p>\n
