Micky Mellon has left League Two side Tranmere Rovers<\/a> for Scottish outfit Dundee United.<\/p>\n

Four Years With Rovers<\/h3>\n

Mellon departs the Birkenhead-based club after joining Dundee United on an undisclosed–<\/strong>year deal.<\/p>\n

The 48-year-old is to end a four-year affinity with Tranmere to replace Robbie Neilson at United.<\/p>\n

Mellon links up with the Scottish side after several days of links with various candidates.<\/p>\n

Former England boss Steve McClaren<\/a> ruled himself out of talks for the role; Jon Daly and Austin MacPhee were also reportedly interviewed.<\/p>\n

Mellon still has a year on his contract with Tranmere Rovers but, after their relegation to League Two<\/a>, he has opted for pastures new.<\/p>\n

Rovers suffered a heartbreaking relegation to the fourth tier as a points-per-game system sent them down by just 0.04.<\/p>\n

He had taken the Super White Army from the National League to League One<\/a> with back-to-back promotions.<\/p>\n

Mellon had previously achieved success with Fleetwood Town<\/a> and Shrewsbury Town<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The move to Dundee United allows him to return to his home country after a playing, and management, career entirely in England.<\/p>\n

Former Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings believes Mellon will take Dundee United to the peak of their success.<\/p>\n

Having played alongside Mellon, and now coach under him at Prenton Park, he is confident the Scotsman will be a success.<\/p>\n

Jennings told the Daily Record<\/a>: “He will be a good appointment. He is a top manager and 100 per cent committed to every job he does.<\/p>\n

“As a manager, he’d be classed as an all-rounder. He’s a good coach and also a good man-manager, great at motivating his teams and the group.<\/p>\n

“He has five promotions and was also the one who signed [Jamie] Vardy<\/a> when he was at Fleetwood so when you look at Micky’s CV it is not a bad one to have.”<\/p>\n
