In fact, he “dreams of more” than just finishing his contract in 2022, he recently told Sky Sports.

Andreas Christensen Sees Long Term Future At Chelsea

Christensen Committed to Chelsea

“I’ve never looked anywhere else,” said Christensen in an interview earlier this week. “I’ve never doubted my situation. I’ve always had my eyes at Chelsea. I’ve had my contract and I’ve always expected to finish that and I’ve always dreamed of even more than that. Nothing has changed. Obviously, it was a different situation last season but I still love being here, that’s the short answer.”

Last year, the situation was different. Under then-manager Maurizio Sarri, Christensen played only eight Premier League games, starting only six. Instead, he featured mainly in the very secondary Europa League and the two domestic cups.

But this year, Christensen has his mojo back. The Dane has played 23 games in all competitions for the Blues and emerged from the coronavirus stoppage as one of two preferred centre backs, starting all three Premier League matches. He did, though, miss last weekend’s FA Cup victory of Leicester with a slight knock to his hip.

According to WhoScored, Christensen has been Chelsea’s second-best defender and best centre back in the Premier League this year. He’s averaged a respectable 2.1 tackles per game, 1.3 interceptions, and 2.9 clearances, and 3.4 aerial duels won in the Premier League this year.

Even better, SofaScore’s records show he has not committed an error that led to a shot or goal.

While Chelsea’s defence has been far from perfect, in fact, it’s been their Achilles heel this year, Christensen has been one their best. That, though, is of course relative. For next year, Christensen is expecting big things.

Christensen Sees Bright Future For Blues

“We are in a process but I think we are way ahead of time,” he said continued. “We know what we are capable of. We feel very comfortable and confident at the moment. [Winning trophies is] where we all want to be, so why not? We’re all hungry. We have a good balance between experienced people and young, exciting talent. So I think that’s the goal for all of us.”

Chelsea are currently in the middle of a fierce battle for Champions League qualification. They sit fourth, just a solitary point behind Leicester and just two above Manchester United and Wolves. Plus they face Man United in the FA Cup semifinals in a few weeks’ time.

For what was a ‘rebuilding year’ under new manager Frank Lampard with a transfer ban last summer, the Blues have done quite well this season.

And with Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner joining the squad for next season, the future is looking bright at Stamford Bridge. And Christensen hopes and plans to be in the middle of it.

Christensen and Chelsea face Watford at home Saturday evening.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Chelsea centre back Andreas Christensen has no plans of departing Stamford Bridge anytime soon.
