Liverpool<\/a> went into last nights game on the back of being crowned Premier League<\/a> champions last Thursday but were humbled by a Manchester City<\/a> side who were keen to lay down a marker.<\/p>\n

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne<\/a>, Raheem Sterling<\/a>, Phil Foden<\/a> and an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain<\/a> own goal rounded off a 4-0 win for the hosts as the champions suffer a heavy defeat at the Etihad.<\/p>\n

Champions Liverpool Suffer Heavy Defeat Against Manchester City<\/h2>\n

Good Start From Liverpool\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Liverpool started well and caused problems for City with their press. Roberto Firmino<\/a> failed to pounce after a Sadio Man\u00e9<\/a> effort was saved by Ederson<\/a>. Mohammed Salah<\/a> also hit the post for the visitors. Liverpool were turning the ball over a lot in the first half but couldn\u2019t find the right pass in the final third, which frustrated manager J\u00fcrgen Klopp.<\/p>\n

Manchester City Blue Wave<\/h3>\n

When City beat the press they had Liverpool on the back foot. De Bruyne was picking up brilliant positions behind Liverpool\u2019s midfield and with Foden narrow too, it created a box midfield for City. City then won a penalty after Joe Gomez<\/a> bundled over Sterling. City\u2019s captain De bruyne dispatched it with ease.<\/p>\n

Foden would soon find Sterling minutes later who beat Gomez and made it 2-0. Liverpool started to crumble and it wasn\u2019t long before Foden made it three after a one-two with De Bruyne. Half time couldn\u2019t come quick enough for Klopp\u2019s men.<\/p>\n

Less Entertaining Second-Half<\/h3>\n

No team looked threatening after the break but Liverpool did have chances through Man\u00e9 and Trent Alexander- Arnold, <\/a>but City would soon make it four. The game went through the motions after that but there was time for some VAR drama with Riyad Mahrez<\/a> convinced he\u2019d added a fifth, but it was ruled out for a handball in the buildup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h3>\n

City were out to put a marker down for next season. It wasn\u2019t as if Liverpool played poorly or weren\u2019t bothered, they just lost concentration too often and didn\u2019t take their chances. J\u00fcrgen Klopp<\/a> was not too happy after but felt his side had \u201cpromising moments.\u201d<\/p>\n

The German added that City \u201cproved a point.” Pep Guardiola was full of praise for his side and gave his team \u201ca lot of credit\u201d as he felt the Liverpool side is the best team \u201che has ever faced.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liverpool host Aston Villa on Sunday as City travel to Southampton on the same day.<\/p>\n
