Sadly, for fans of Peterborough United, they are unlikely to see him play for their club again.

Several top clubs want Toney. Many of whom are attracted to landing a proven goal scorer, possibly at a bargain price. According to Alan Swann of Peterborough Telegraph, the club has rejected another bid for the striker.

Peterborough United Reject Bid for Ivan Toney

Bid Rejected

It was confirmed yesterday that New York Red Bulls, of the MLS, had suffered a setback in their pursuit of Toney. This is causing fresh optimism in Glasgow, as both Celtic and Rangers are also in the chase for the striker.

The Red Bulls have submitted a £4 million bid for the striker, who last season scored 26 goals in 39 appearances for Peterborough. Understandably, Posh are holding out for a much larger fee. Peterborough director of football Barry Fry confirmed to the Peterborough Telegraph, that the bid has been rejected.

He said: “New York Red Bulls have plenty of money, but they didn’t offer us anywhere near enough for Ivan.

“It was £4 million with several add ons, but we will get bigger offers than that once our 2019-20 season comes to an end,” Fry told

Going Cheap?

Whether Peterborough will receive the £15 million that they desire for Toney, is open to question. This is due to the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, Fry recently told the Peterborough Telegraph that Toney would not be sold cheaply.

Fry said: “We are not going to be short of offers and he will not be leaving on the cheap. Ivan has been an incredible signing. His improvement in two seasons with us has been remarkable.”

Both Celtic and Rangers are reportedly monitoring the situation regarding Toney, as are clubs in the Bundesliga. However, it is thought that the Glasgow clubs will only move for Toney if they lose their current main strikers this summer.

Toney, who is still only 24, has scored 92 career goals in 267 matches. He joined Peterborough from Newcastle United in August 2018. The transfer fee was undisclosed, although Fry recently stated it was just £350,000. Newcastle will also receive an additional payment through a sell-on clause.

Loan Success

Originally, the 24-year-old began his career at Northampton Town before Newcastle signed him for an undisclosed fee in summer 2015. During his three years at Newcastle, he made just four substitute appearances, but did enjoy considerable loan success at clubs including Shrewsbury Town and Scunthorpe United.

Last summer, Charlton Athletic had a bid for the striker rejected. Although Charlton are now out of contention, he could remain in English football, as West Bromwich Albion are also showing interest.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

Ivan Toney is the hottest property in the lower leagues of English football at present.
