Lawrence joins from league counterparts Newport County as a managerial consultant to Alex Revell, who gave up his playing duties to manage the team in a bid to secure their League Two survival.

Lennie Lawrence Joins Stevenage

A Similar Role at Newport

Lawrence’s last role as a sole manager was back in 2003, where he had two years at Cardiff City. He had a short spell as the joint caretaker manager of Crystal Palace in 2012, alongside Curtis Flemming when Dougie Freedman left the club.

The managerial consultant role is one that he held at Newport since 2017 alongside Mike Flynn. He helped the former County player to steer the club away from relegation in 2016/17, where an 89th-minute winner against Notts County saved them from the drop.

Rather than managing the club himself, he will be more of a guidance figure for Revell as he continues his development as a manager.

What Was Said?

On the appointment, Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace told the club website: “Lennie is one of the most experienced individuals in the game. We are delighted he’s agreed to becoming involved day to day in the re-shaping of the First Team, working with Alex and helping develop him as a young manager.

“Over the last decade Lennie has worked with and improved a number of successful managers including Paul Trollope, Dougie Freeman and Michael Flynn. We believe this appointment is a positive step in helping us rebuild to gain success on the pitch.”

Where Will Stevenage Be Next Season?

Stevenage currently sit bottom of League Two in the sole relegation place. The EFL have confirmed that they wish for relegation to remain in the division, in spite of League Two clubs voting to not go ahead with relegation in light of the premature halting of the season.

However, Macclesfield Town, who sit two points ahead of Stevenage after two separate points deductions, are now facing a potential third deduction, which would see them move to the bottom of the table.

It could secure a miraculous survival for Stevenage, who have only won three games all season – the last one coming on January 18.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

League Two side Stevenage have confirmed the appointment of Lennie Lawrence to the club’s management team.
