Mario Gotze has had two separate stints at Signal Iduna Park with Borussia Dortmund, but he is set to depart this summer.<\/p>\n
The midfielder will leave the club on a free transfer this summer after his contract expires, the Bundesliga<\/a> club has confirmed.<\/p>\n The 2014 World Cup winner rejoined Dortmund in 2016 from rivals Bayern Munich<\/a> for \u00a320 million.<\/p>\n His first season back in Dortmund saw him make 16 appearances as he struggled for fitness.<\/p>\n In the next three seasons, the midfielder made 86 appearances across all competitions but, ultimately hasn’t been in the plans of Lucian Favre.<\/p>\n “We will part ways with Mario Gotze<\/a> this summer,” the Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told Sky Germany.<\/a><\/p>\n “It was a mutual and respectful decision. Mario is a great man.”<\/p>\n “Right now, we are playing 3-4-3,” Favre told the media<\/a> before Saturday’s Bundesliga match with Wolfsburg.<\/p>\n “So, I have been talking to Mario, and unfortunately this is not the right system for him. You must say the truth about this.”<\/p>\n The midfielder featured in five games out of the six in the 2014 World Cup.<\/p>\n The first game was against Portugal<\/a> in Group G with Germany<\/a> cruising to a 4-0 win and with Gotze getting an assist.<\/p>\n Game number two saw the midfielder deployed as a winger against Ghana<\/a> with the game finishing 2-2 and Gotze getting on the scoresheet.<\/p>\n Moving onto the third group game and Germany would win that one 1-0 against the USA<\/a> with Gotze playing 14 minutes in the game.<\/p>\n Onto the knockout stages and Germany would beat Algeria<\/a> 2-1 after extra-time in the Round of 16.<\/p>\n They would then knockout France<\/a> beating them 1-0 in the Quarter-Finals and they would humiliate Brazil<\/a> 7-1 with Gotze not featuring in that game.<\/p>\n This set up a final against Argentina<\/a> with the game going all the way into extra-time.<\/p>\n Gotze came on just before the end of the second-half and scored the winner for Germany in the dieing embers of extra-time.<\/p>\n Main PhotoBorussia Dortmund Return<\/h3>\n
