Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, opposes any Premier League<\/a> matches taking part in the capital, according to reports from Dan Kilpatrick at the Evening Standard.<\/a><\/p>\n

The London Mayor’s response comes after the government announced elite sport could resume as early as June 1<\/a>. However, Khan seems reluctant to allow the six London teams to host matches.<\/p>\n

Sadiq Khan Against Premier League Matches in London<\/h2>\n

Khan’s Concern<\/h3>\n

Khan reportedly wants all professional sport not to resume too early in the capital. However, the mayor also wants sport in the capital to go ahead when safe to do so.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the Mayor, speaking the Evening Standard<\/a>, said: “Sadiq is extremely keen for the Premier League and professional sport in general to resume. However, with the country still in the grips of this crisis, and hundreds of people dying every day, he believes that it’s too early to be discussing the resumption of the Premier League and top-flight sport in the capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Liverpool fan, Sadiq of course wants the Premier League to return. But it can only happen when safe to do so. It cannot place any extra burden on the NHS and emergency services.\u201d<\/p>\n

27 of the 92 fixtures to be played would take place in London. Five of these fixtures will take place at Watford’s Vicarage road.<\/p>\n

Dilemmas for a Premier League return<\/h3>\n

It’s believed that a return to Premier League football could take place on June 12<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, conditions for the return of the Premier League continue to take place. Some teams and players still oppose a return of football over safety concerns.<\/p>\n

A meeting will take place tomorrow<\/a> between the Premier League, the Secretary of State for the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden and the Metropolitan Police to discuss the issue of fans gathering outside grounds despite closed doors matches taking place.<\/p>\n
