It’s no surprise that Fernandinho wants to keep playing in a Manchester City shirt.

Fernandinho Looking for Contract Extension

Further Talks

Fernandinho, who turns 35 on May 4, was still playing near his best when the Premier League season was postponed. His play rightfully earned the extension triggered to keep him in Manchester next season.

But in an interview with Sky Sports, Fernandinho hoped it’s more than next season. When Sky asked him about Kevin De Bruyne‘s comments on extending his career, he smiled and said: “First of all, I just want to get back to work and play again. I extended my contract a couple of months ago and I am so happy, but after that, we’ll see. If we have another conversation about another contract in the future, I would be happy. But if not, I would be happy as well because I know what I have done for this club and what this club has done for me, how they have helped me. This time has been a pleasure for me.”

Keeping Fernandinho at City should still be a priority for Txghi Begiristan and co. The Brazilian has looked strong in his transition to centre-back, and with Vincent Kompany gone and David Silva set to leave, it will be important for City to hang on to an experienced leader like Fernandinho.

Once David Silva departs he will hand the armband to Fernandinho. So instead of having three captains in three seasons, City might be wise to keep Fernandinho around, especially while he still brings so much value.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Manchester City‘s veteran Brazilian Fernandinho is looking for a contract extension to keep him at the Etihad beyond June 2021. The soon to be 35-year-old is still incredibly important to City, having made 22 Premier League starts at centre-back this season.
