The French Ligue 1 season is set to be cancelled in accordance with government guidelines, according to Mohamed Bouhafs<\/a>i.<\/p>\n

Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 Season to Be Cancelled<\/h2>\n

Government Announcement Expected<\/h3>\n

A government announcement is expected to postpone all sporting events in the country until August at least.<\/p>\n

As a result, this means that football will not be able to resume until then. This has meant that there has been choice but to end the current season.<\/p>\n

According to Alex Richards of the Daily Mirror<\/a>, outcomes such as promotion and relegation remain unresolved. The governing body of football in France, the LFP, will decide this at a later date.<\/p>\n

If the standing were to remain as they were, it would mean that Paris Saint-Germain<\/a> would be crowned champions of Ligue 1, while Nimes, Amiens and Toulouse would be relegated.<\/p>\n

However, deciding who would be promoted to the top-flight would be more complicated, as there is just four points separating the top five sides.<\/p>\n

Lorient and Lens occupy the top two places, which guarantees automatic promotion. AC Ajaccio, Troyes and Clermont then occupy the three play-off places.<\/p>\n

Third Major League to Be Postponed Due to Coronavirus<\/h3>\n

The abrupt ending to the Ligue 1 season will mean it is the third major league to be declared finished due to the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n

Both the Dutch Eredivisie and Belgian Pro League have been brought to an end. However, both could still finish their 2019\/20 campaigns.<\/p>\n

According to the Independent<\/a>, the formalities to officially cancel the season have not yet begun, meaning they could still decide to resume the season.<\/p>\n

There remains no definitive date for football to resume in England. The beginning of June appears to be the most likely date, however, there is no official announcement yet.<\/p>\n

When it resume in England, it is likely that the culmination of the season will take place as soon as possible, in order for the 2020\/21 season to begin.<\/p>\n
