His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/sport\/soccer\/2020\/0422\/1134121-michael-oneill-northern-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decision<\/a> was made on Wednesday, April 22 stepping down as the nation\u2019s boss with immediate effect. O\u2019Neill will continue his managerial role at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonfootball.com\/clubs\/stoke-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stoke City<\/a> with the hopes of guiding the Potters back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonfootball.com\/category\/premier-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Premier League<\/a> where they competed for 10 years from 2008-18.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stoke City Boss Michael O\u2019Neill Steps Down from Northern Irish Role<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Postponement of Euro 2020 Play-Offs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With UEFA announcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonfootball.com\/2020\/03\/17\/uefa-european-championship-postponed-to-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">postponement<\/a> of the European Championships until 2021, Northern Ireland\u2019s play-off clash with Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina has been put on halt until the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After eight and a half years in charge of the Ulstermen, qualifying for Euro 2020 would have been the perfect send-off for O\u2019Neill, however, amidst such unprecedented times, his role was ultimately cut short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He stated: <\/span>&#8220;I would have loved the opportunity to manage Northern Ireland in the UEFA 2020 play-off game versus Bosnia and Herzegovina and the chance to qualify for another major tournament, but the current situation means that this is no longer possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satisfied with the job he had done, O\u2019Neill claimed: &#8220;<\/span>It was important to leave the association and team in the strongest possible shape in order to not only have the best chance of qualifying for Euro 2021 but allow the new manager time to build upon the success that we have had during my eight-year tenure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His decision comes just three weeks after former Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy announced his departure from his sides set-up, similarly citing the postponement of these play-offs as the main factor, with the Republic due to play Slovakia in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did Other Factors Influence the Decision of O&#8217;Neill?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following his departure, O\u2019Neill had some choice words regarding the eligibility debate between Northern Ireland &amp; the Republic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With numerous Northern Irish youth players being somewhat \u2018poached\u2019 by the Republic of Ireland set-up, O\u2019Neill was never shy to express his opinion on this tricky subject, often sparking a tense back and forth between himself and then Republic of Ireland manager Martin O\u2019Neill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, with h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is international management days behind him, O\u2019Neill voiced his towards FIFA &amp; UEFA stating: <\/span><b>&#8220;<\/b>Ultimately the choice belongs to the individual, I have never disputed that. My only grievance has been the issue of young players being put in a position where they were asked to change their international allegiance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not even about the FAI &#8211; ultimately UEFA and FIFA wouldn&#8217;t allow it either.
