According to Ryan Gray of the Watford Observer<\/a>, Watford<\/a> will not use the furlough scheme to pay their non-playing staff.<\/p>\n

Controversial Use<\/h3>\n

The use of the scheme – which sees the government pay 80% of an employee’s wages up to \u00a32,500 – has been used controversially by Premier League sides.<\/p>\n

Both Tottenham<\/a> and Newcastle United<\/a> have placed their non-playing staff<\/a> on the scheme in order to cut costs. Liverpool<\/a> also announced that they would be using the scheme, however, that decision has since been reversed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lower down the football pyramid, clubs have placed all staff, including players on the scheme. League Two sides Cambridge United<\/a>, Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City<\/a> and Leyton Orient<\/a> have all used the initiative.<\/p>\n

As a result, the use of the scheme by high-profile clubs has proved controversial. Several people, including government ministers, have said that Premier League players should take a pay cut in order to help pay the wages of non-playing staff.<\/p>\n

Talks to Continue Over Pay Cut for Players<\/h3>\n

While Watford have confirmed that they will nor furlough non-playing staff at Vicarage Road, talks continue over the decision for the players to take a pay cut.<\/p>\n

The club’s hierarchy are in “no rush” according to the Watford Observer, as they have plenty of time to consider their options this month.<\/p>\n

A league-wide proposal that all clubs should ask their players to take a pay cut was announced last week, as it was announced that football will remain postponed beyond April 30.<\/p>\n

However, there is now tension among footballers, as they believe that they have been thrown into the limelight unnecessarily. Crystal Palace<\/a> winger Andros Townsend<\/a> is one player who has publicly criticised<\/a> Matt Hancock.<\/p>\n

As a result, negotiations are set to continue between the Professional Footballer’s Association and the Premier League hierarchy.<\/p>\n
