Manchester United <\/a>defender Chris Smalling<\/a> wants a move to Arsenal<\/a> or Tottenham Hotspur<\/a>, according to Jack Otway of the Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Manchester United\u2019s Chris Smalling Wants Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur Move<\/h2>\n

Struggling for Manchester United<\/h3>\n

Chris Smalling was struggling for Manchester United before his loan move to Roma. The Englishman could not firmly establish a place in the starting XI, with league appearances hovering around the 20 mark for the last few seasons.<\/p>\n

Since Rio Ferdinand<\/a> and Nemanja Vidic<\/a> retired, the Red Devils have not had a world-class centre-back, with the likes of Eric Bailly<\/a>, Victor Lindelof<\/a>,\u00a0Phil Jones<\/a>, and Smalling not up to that standard.<\/p>\n

Although Harry Maguire<\/a> has greatly helped this season, the defensive partnership has been shaky at times, and Smalling\u2019s return will not do much in the way of stabilisation. He has, however, had a very positive loan spell with Roma.<\/p>\n

Good Performances on Loan at Roma<\/h3>\n

Smalling has played very well since moving to Roma. The 30-year-old has been their first choice centre-back and has proven his worth for the Italian outfit, even popping up with an occasional goal or assist.<\/p>\n

His career seems to have been somewhat reignited since his move to Italy, driving his price higher. United value<\/a> him in the region of \u00a320-25 million, but Roma, who were considering a move for his signature, described<\/a> this fee as \u201cunthinkable\u201d.<\/p>\n

Chris Smalling Still Likely to Leave with Arsenal and Tottenham Interested<\/h3>\n

Despite Roma\u2019s unwillingness to fork out a hefty sum for the Englishman, there are clubs closer to home who might. Two London teams, Arsenal and Tottenham, are monitoring his progress. Both sides have had defensive troubles of their own this season, lacking a stable defensive partnership, and may be looking for Smalling\u2019s help.<\/p>\n

Although the Englishman would only be a temporary replacement, he would still be necessary. Spurs might lose Jan Vertonghen<\/a>, with his contract running out at the end of the season, but as there is much uncertainty over deals expiring on June 30, it remains to be seen what will happen here.<\/p>\n

Regardless, both clubs have expressed their interest in the 30-year-old, and with Smalling preferring a Premier League<\/a> return, the London clubs will battle for his signature this summer.<\/p>\n
