Tottenham<\/a> have placed all non-playing staff on furlough leave in order to battle the financial crisis facing football in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Second Premier League Club to Take Action<\/h3>\n

Tottenham are the second club to place their non-playing staff on temporary leave after Newcastle United’s<\/a> announcement<\/a> on March 30.<\/p>\n

A statement from chairman Daniel Levy on the official website said:<\/a> “The Club\u2019s operations have effectively ceased, some of our fans will have lost their jobs and most will be worried about their future. Our sponsors will be concerned about their businesses and our media partners have no certainty when we may play games again or whether we will be allowed to play in front of our fans. In the meantime, the Club has an annual cost base running into hundreds of millions of pounds.<\/p>\n

“We have seen some of the biggest clubs in the world such as Barcelona<\/a>, Bayern Munich<\/a> and Juventus<\/a> take steps to reduce their costs. Yesterday, having already taken steps to reduce costs, we ourselves made the difficult decision \u2013 in order to protect jobs \u2013 to reduce the remuneration of all 550 non-playing directors and employees for April and May by 20% utilising, where appropriate, the Government\u2019s furlough scheme. We shall continue to review this position.<\/p>\n

“We hope the current discussions between the Premier League, PFA and LMA will result in players and coaches doing their bit for the football eco system.”<\/p>\n

Other clubs may follow suit. According to Adam Crafton of The Athletic<\/a>, clubs are in talks to create a league-wide deferral of wages.<\/p>\n

While clubs are missing out on revenue through the suspension of football, several clubs are continuing to pay their non-playing staff through this crisis.<\/p>\n

Crystal Palace<\/a> have confirmed<\/a> that they will continue to pay all staff on their payroll, as have<\/a> Brighton & Hove Albion<\/a>.<\/p>\n
