{"id":546038,"date":"2020-03-17T08:10:49","date_gmt":"2020-03-17T12:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonfootball.com\/?p=546038"},"modified":"2020-03-17T08:10:49","modified_gmt":"2020-03-17T12:10:49","slug":"championship-sides-legal-battle-coronavirus-suspension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/03\/17\/championship-sides-legal-battle-coronavirus-suspension\/","title":{"rendered":"Championship Sides &#8216;Ready for Legal Battle&#8217; Following Coronavirus Suspension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A host of top Championship sides are ready to open a legal battle if the current season is declared void because of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<h2>Championship Sides &#8216;Ready for Legal Battle&#8217; Following Coronavirus Suspension<\/h2>\n<h3>Top Six to Challenge Potential Decision<\/h3>\n<p>The Championship top six are prepared to begin a legal battle if the current Premier League season is declared void.<\/p>\n<p>Football across the world has been suspended in recent days as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Premier League and EFL fixtures have been suspended until early April; however, there has been no indication as to how the remainder of the season will be conducted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/championship-clubs-ready-for-legal-action-if-premier-league-is-deemed-void-s8gtwjckn\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Times<\/a>, however, claim that the Championship&#8217;s top six &#8211; Leeds United, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonfootball.com\/clubs\/west-brom\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Brom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonfootball.com\/clubs\/fulham\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fulham<\/a>, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston North End &#8211; held a secret meeting on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The report suggests the meeting was to discuss their current position on the season&#8217;s suspension.<\/p>\n<p>It is also reported that a conference call including the remainder of the league&#8217;s sides will take place today; this will be a follow-up meeting to discuss their proposals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"apester-media\" data-media-id=\"5e70be0ab1901b109c24e2d0\" height=\"416\"><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/static.apester.com\/js\/sdk\/latest\/apester-sdk.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The report, by reputable journalists Matt Lawton and Martyn Ziegler, describes clubs as &#8220;seething&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It comes in retaliation to comments by some top-flight clubs about possibly scrapping the current season.<\/p>\n<p>At the weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonfootball.com\/clubs\/west-ham\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Ham United<\/a> vice-chairman Karen Brady said in her weekly Sun newspaper column: &#8220;The only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Understandably, many of the Championship&#8217;s sides want to have the remainder of the season completed even if it means the next campaign is delayed.<\/p>\n<p>It is also understood that the top six clubs want all three promotion spots protected.<\/p>\n<p>Two teams are promoted automatically to the top-flight with another battling for promotion through the play-offs.<\/p>\n<p>However, suggestions that the current top two &#8211; Leeds and West Brom &#8211; could be added to a 22-team Premier League have frustrated the four teams currently occupying spots in the play-off positions.<\/p>\n<p>Main Photo<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; <a id=\"UO19VhdaSYJLl0AlKk3I9Q\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/1210997408\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'UO19VhdaSYJLl0AlKk3I9Q',sig:'MYHHnJLbkY_DH1taQnGw0YbvfvGyIjjE6h8onH4WLxs=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1210997408',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A host of top Championship sides are ready to open a legal battle if the current season is declared void because of coronavirus.
