Troy Parrott<\/a> has a place at Tottenham Hotspur<\/a>, despite Mick McCarthy’s dismay<\/a> at the player for not securing any loan move to gain some experience. The Republic of Ireland manager claims that the player may not feature in the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifying fixture and it would be due to a lack of playing time.<\/p>\n

McCarthy said<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s great for him financially, he\u2019s got a new contract but I wish he was playing football somewhere. He couldn\u2019t go out before because of his age and I understand that but if he\u2019s not playing competitive football he has very little chance of being in the squad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish he\u2019d gone to Charlton and played games on loan.”<\/p>\n

Parrott’s Situation<\/h3>\n

The player is not a regular starter for the club. And, indeed, the player could see more playing time for a club lower in the football pyramid. However, he is still a regular player included in matchday squads and benches. Whilst Harry Kane<\/a> recovers, Parrott is still covering an important role in providing an attacking option. His cameo appearances, however short, are invaluable glimpses into Premier League action. There are also upcoming fixtures, such as the FA Cup match against Norwich City,<\/a> which could give him some more minutes on the field.<\/p>\n

Although, it is arguable that Parrott does need to see more time on the pitch. He is a young player of immense potential which must be tapped into. He has only one Premier League appearance thus far.<\/p>\n

A technical issue relating to UEFA’s squad lists meant that Spurs couldn’t possibly loan Parrott out anyhow. Kevin Palmer of the Independent asserts:<\/p>\n

“[A] UEFA rule that meant he could not leave Spurs on loan until he turned 18, as he needed to be a Spurs player for two full years to qualify for UEFA’s Champions League B list as a homegrown player.”<\/p>\n

Verdict<\/h2>\n

McCarthy is spelling doom for Parrott’s chances at the upcoming Euro qualifier. Naturally, if a more experienced striker is getting more gametime for the Republic of Ireland, then Parrott may miss out. However, the striker is still working hard in training and may well feature in the next few weeks for Spurs.<\/p>\n

There was a technicality preventing Spurs from sending the youngster on loan, despite how valuable that might have been. He does need to see more minutes on the pitch, for he does have a great deal of potential which will only wane with too much time on the bench.<\/p>\n
