Jan Vertonghen<\/a>‘s agent<\/a> has insisted \u201cthe door is still open\u201d for the defender to sign a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Belgian’s current deal is set to expire in the summer, meaning he is free to talk to foreign clubs ahead of joining them as a free agent. However, it still remains to be seen as to whether he will be offered new terms in north London.<\/p>\n

De Mul Insists ‘the Door Is Still Open’ for Jan Vertonghen’s Contract Renewal at Tottenham Hotspur<\/h2>\n

A Potential Future in North London<\/h3>\n

Having seen club and national compatriot Toby Alderweireld<\/a> being awarded new terms at Spurs, Vertonghen’s future still remains up in the air. While the Belgian awaits Jose Mourinho’s decision, there are potential suitors abroad who are interested<\/a> in the defender.<\/p>\n

However, Vertonghen’s agent, Tom De Mul, hasn’t ruled out his client remaining in north London.<\/p>\n

Speaking to HLN<\/a> in Belgium, De Mul said: \u201cWe currently have no agreement, but I do not exclude anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe list everything. There is a lot of interest for Jan, certainly as a free player, but Tottenham also remains an interesting option for us. The door is still open.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Struggles This Season<\/h3>\n

For large parts of this season, Vertonghen has struggled to nail down a spot in the Spurs back-line, where he has been a fixture since joining the club in 2012<\/a>. At 32-years-old, age appears to be catching up with the Belgian, especially after his emotional reaction to being substituted early in the FA Cup Replay triumph against Southampton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, Vertonghen’s agent has insisted the incident on Wednesday has been blown out of proportion. He said: \u201cVertonghen was worried, but things are already going much better. This [reaction] had nothing to do with his future. It is made a bit too big in my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is difficult for Jan to hide that, but that’s just the way he is,\u201d De Mul added. \u201cHe is still very happy with Tottenham and feels great in London.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is 32, but he is still so ambitious, he is focused. The Euros, for example, are super important to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s the beauty of him. He wants to play at the highest level in a top competition for as long as possible. He is still very hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n
