Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> have announced the signing of Steven Bergwijn<\/a>. He will join the club for five years for an unknown fee, following his transfer from PSV Eindhoven. It will be hoped that he can help the club reach the top four by the end of the season.<\/p>\n

Steven Bergwijn Joins Tottenham<\/h3>\n

Tottenham have signed Steven Bergwijn, allowing Jose Mourinho to have another option in attack.<\/p>\n

This is useful given that Christian Eriksen<\/a> has now left<\/a> and Harry Kane<\/a> is a long term absentee.<\/p>\n

Bergwijn has the talent to be able to establish himself as the first choice.<\/p>\n

He will be competing with Erik Lamela<\/a>, Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura<\/a> for a starting berth.<\/p>\n

He registered ten assists in 16 Eredivisie games for PSV and Tottenham will be hoping he can provide similar service to this for their attack.<\/p>\n

That his contract runs for five years suggests that they see him as an investment for both the present and the long-term.<\/p>\n

A Change in Approach?<\/h2>\n

Daniel Levy has often been criticised for the way in which he approaches the transfer market.<\/p>\n

There were times under Mauricio Pochettino<\/a> where Tottenham went entire transfer windows without making a signing.<\/p>\n

There were three consecutive windows which saw only Lucas Moura brought in to the club.<\/p>\n

Many suggested that Jose Mourinho would struggle at Tottenham due to Levy’s apparent refusal to sign players.<\/p>\n

However, it seems that there has been a slight change in approach.<\/p>\n

Bergwijn will be Mourinho’s first real signing at the club, while Giovanni Lo Celso’s loan deal has already been made permanent.<\/a><\/p>\n

It could just be that Levy sees the need to replace the departed Eriksen, though Mourinho’s reputation may have also had something to do with it.<\/p>\n

Mourinho has proven that his methods work, so it would make little sense to deny him the opportunity to continue them.<\/p>\n
