Gedson Fernandes<\/a> will be signing his new Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> contract in the next few hours. West Ham<\/a> were never in the race for his signature. This is according to Fabrizio Romano<\/a>.<\/p>\n

REPORT: Gedson Fernandes Close to Tottenham Hotspur Move<\/h2>\n

Spurs will be able to bolster their midfield capabilities with this move. The young Portugal international is a talent to develop. Sky Sports<\/a> have previously suggested that the player will sign on an 18-month loan deal. There is a \u00a356m option to buy during this loan period. Thus, this is a relatively low-risk transfer for the club. They will be able to assess the player, give him a chance to adapt to English football and then decide if they want to keep him.<\/p>\n

Youth Project<\/h3>\n

It is promising to see the club investing in younger players<\/a> once again. Gedson Fernandes will help to bring down the average age of the squad. Eventually, the older relics such as Victor Wanyama<\/a> may have to be edged out of the squad in the summer. Bringing in the younger talent first allows for a smoother transition and rebuild of the squad.<\/p>\n

Fernandes’ arrival may impact on prospective talents coming up through the academy. But, with the current spate of injuries in the midfield, this should not harm the game time of the likes of Oliver Skipp<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Transfer Strategy<\/h3>\n

If Gedson Fernandes’ move can be finalised, then he will be the first signing under Jose Mourinho. Spurs’ last signings before that were Tanguy Ndombele<\/a>, Giovani Lo Celso<\/a>, Ryan Sessegnon<\/a> and Jack Clarke<\/a>. Most of these players are in fact of a similar ilk; Ndombele and Lo Celso are the oldest (23), which is still places these players in their developing phase. The signing of Gedson Fernandes thus continues the recent investment in younger, hungrier players. None of these signings have been world-beaters, but nevertheless Daniel Levy has been injecting a little more money into the club. This also includes his change of manager.<\/p>\n

It will now be interesting to see whether Levy continues to splash out, or whether Jose Mourinho will face the same issues as Mauricio Pochettino<\/a> in terms of a budget that throttles the manager’s aspirations.<\/p>\n
