Sky Bet League One side Tranmere Rovers have signed former Everton defender Peter Clarke from Fleetwood Town.<\/p>\n
Micky Mellon has added the experienced defender as Rovers look to push away from the relegation zone.<\/p>\n
The Whites find themselves three points adrift of safety having lost 4-1 at home to Coventry City on New Year’s Day.<\/p>\n
Mellon’s side have conceded 43 goals already this term, the third-lowest total in the league; only Bolton Wanderers (46) and Southend United (65) have conceded more.<\/p>\n
Clarke, who turns 38 on Friday, 3 January, 2020, had been with Fleetwood since August.<\/p>\n
Having made 17 appearances in all competitions for Joey Barton’s side, the defender moves to Prenton Park on an undisclosed-length contract.<\/p>\n
The defender, who was signed too late to feature in Wednesday’s loss to Coventry, could feature in Tranmere’s FA Cup trip to Watford.<\/p>\n
The signing of Clarke marks Mellon’s first foray into the transfer market as he looks to make improvements.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the club website, Mellon said: “We\u2019re really pleased to bring Peter to the Club. We needed to add experience to the defence.<\/p>\n
“He\u2019s an organiser and a leader and he has great ability too. More than anything, he\u2019s a winner and a top professional.<\/p>\n
“We need to concede less and keep more clean sheets which we believe he can help us do with his experience. I\u2019m delighted to have him on board.”<\/p>\n
Clarke, who has made more than 700 career appearances, added: “I’m really happy and I’m looking forward to getting started. I’m honest, hardworking, I wear my heart on my sleeve and I will leave everything out there on the pitch.<\/p>\n
“I spoke to the manager and we had a long chat about what he wants at the Club and what is already in place. It\u2019s now time that we progress and move forward.”<\/p>\n
