Only a few weeks ago, there was talk as to how Tottenham<\/a> may react to a number of key players potentially leaving next summer, as all were out of contract. Toby Alderweireld<\/a> was one of those players; however, he has committed his future to Tottenham with the announcement of a new contract<\/a>. It shows the intent for a smooth transition into the future, as a squad overhaul appears on the horizon.<\/p>\n

A New Contract for Toby Alderweireld at Tottenham Shows Intent for a Smooth Transition into the Future<\/h2>\n

For Now At Least, Toby Alderweireld Is Still A Key Player At Tottenham<\/h3>\n

Since his arrival in 2015, Toby Alderweireld has been a key player for Tottenham. He has formed an unbreakable bond at the heart of defence with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen<\/a>, and has often been linked with a transfer higher up the food chain.<\/p>\n

However, the centre-back is now 30-years old. As a result, he is perhaps edging past his best, and won’t be able to continue making 40 appearances every season. While his experience is, and still will be, vital for Tottenham, Jose Mourinho can not rely on him forever.<\/p>\n

In the short-term though, Alderweireld is still a vital player in a position that is not easy to replace. His Champions League know-how is key for Tottenham, in a period where they are looking to maintain their Champions League status.<\/p>\n

A Squad Overhaul Is Starting To Take Shape<\/h3>\n

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham had a core of players. The Belgian was apart of that core, alongside Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen<\/a> and Harry Kane<\/a>, to name a few.<\/p>\n

However, Vertonghen and Eriksen are out of contract next summer, and in a time where there is a new name at the helm, an overhaul may be necessary.<\/p>\n

Last summer saw the beginning of a squad overhaul taking shape. Pochettino called for new recruits and was granted his wish. A focus on youth was held, with Ryan Sessesgnon<\/a> and Tanguy Ndombele<\/a> both deemed promising players under the age of 23.<\/p>\n

Undoubtedly, the squad overhaul will continue. However, keeping Toby Alderweireld signals that Tottenham want a smooth transition into the future.<\/p>\n
