As poor as the visitors were, Jose Mourinho is creating a much more direct Tottenham who ripped through the Lancashire club time and again in an emphatic 5-0 victory.

Harry Kane Double at Heart of More Direct Tottenham Hotspur

Passing With a Purpose

As good as Tottenham Hotspur were under Mauricio Pochettino, there was a tendency to try and pass the ball around too much. Passing around the 18-yard box and an inability to break down teams who ‘parked the bus’ became a constant problem.

Mourinho hasn’t had a chance to change too much at Spurs but one thing he has done is to make Tottenham more direct in their play. Toby Alderweireld looks to hit the front with his wide range of accurate passing. Son and Lucas Moura have pace in abundance and Kane is capable of scoring from distance. Burnley spent the afternoon chasing back and Tottenham look an exciting proposition playing forwards at every opportunity.

Son on Fire

Dele Alli has been back to his best under Mourinho but it was Son who really caught the eye against Burnley. The ball fell to him in the 32nd minute of the game in the edge of the Spurs penalty area. He looked up and powered through the field. He looked up once, twice and with nothing else on kept going with speed and skill reminiscent of Diego Maradonna. His finish was superb and the roof of the stadium was nearly blown right off.

It was further evidence of Spurs playing on the front foot.

Kane’s goals were typical of the player. The first, a powerful, swerving and dipping shot from distance and the second a piledriver inside the 18-yard box. Moura was also on the score sheet and a second goal of the season for Moussa Sissoko capped off a fine afternoon.

Next Up

Burnley are on a poor run of form and are now just three points above the drop zone. They next face Newcastle United at Turf Moor on 15th December and need to halt their slide quickly. Against Tottenham, they showed none of the desire and doggedness usually associated with Sean Dyche’s men.

For Tottenham, they travel to Bayern Munich on Wednesday with the luxury of already being into the knock out stages of the Champions League. Subsequently, the likes of Kane, Son and Alli are likely to stay at home before returning to action on Sunday against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

A Harry Kane double and a sublime solo effort from Son Heung-min gave Tottenham Hostpur all three points against Burnley.
