Jonjo Shelvey has asked for an extension to his Newcastle United contract, with aspirations of ending his career at St James’ Park.<\/p>\n
Shelvey, who joined Newcastle United from Swansea City in 2016, is currently tied down with a contract until 2021.<\/p>\n
The midfielder made the comments prior to scoring an emphatic leveller against Manchester City – allowing his former side, Liverpool, to extend their lead over third-placed City to 11 points.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the club programme, he said: “I want to stay here, and hopefully a contract will be sorted.<\/p>\n
“The kids love it up here – they’ve got their friends here.”<\/p>\n
Shelvey has made 99 appearances for the Magpies since switching in 2016, scoring eleven goals.<\/p>\n
In the matchday programme, Shelvey also spoke openly about the criticism he has received on social media for some of his recent performances.<\/p>\n
He said: “I’m not going to listen to, I don’t know, Pete underscore 69 or whatever, [rather] than my dad.<\/p>\n
“What does he know about football? And even my dad, to an extent – they’ve not played professional football.<\/p>\n
“They don’t know what it’s like on a football pitch.<\/p>\n
“Even I’m probably the same – I sit on an armchair watching the Champions League thinking, ‘how’s he playing in the Champions League?’<\/p>\n
“It’s wrong, it’s the wrong thing to do, and at the end of the day I’ve never played in the Champions League, so what right have I got to say that about someone?<\/p>\n
“But everyone’s got their opinions.<\/p>\n
“Football is based on opinions nowadays.”<\/p>\n
Newcastle United are 14th in the Premier League, four points clear of the relegation zone.<\/p>\n
