The past week has, once again, been no exception. This weeks Sunderland weekly roundup takes a look at two Max Power wonder goals. The Black Cats progressed in the Carabao Cup and collected three points in the League.

As appears to be normal on a weekly basis, we also have the latest takeover talk as current owner Stewart Donald gives an update. We also have the latest injury news as Aiden McGeady and Duncan Watmore look to return soon.

Sunderland Weekly Roundup

A Power Strike Sees off Blades

Sunderland travelled to Premier League new boys Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup. The Black Cats made eight changes while the Blades made ten. A brilliant goal from midfielder Max Power which found the top corner sealed their passage to the next round. A trip to Oxford United now awaits.

Power and O’Nien Edge Sunderland Past MK Dons

After just one defeat so far this season, some sections were actually calling for a change in manager. However, a glorious strike from Max Power and a lob over Lee Nicholls from Luke O’Nien gave Sunderland the three points.

The home side should have been out of sight by halftime; however, the post and a lack of killer instinct saw MK Dons trail by just two goals at the break

After halftime, the home side dropped too deep allowing MK Dons back into the game as Jordan Bowery bundled an effort over the line. At 2-1 both sides had chances, but it was Sunderland who deservedly collected the victory.

Takeover Update

Current Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has given an update on the proposed takeover. At a recent fans talk-in, and on twitter, Donald said that the takeover is not as advanced as some have made out. However, it is better than 50/50. More is expected to be known in the next week or two.

Jack Ross Linked With Move

This past week has seen manager Jack Ross linked with a return to Scottish football. Hibernian manager Paul Heckingbottom is currently under pressure. The Scottish Premier League club are currently second bottom and Heckingbottom could be relieved of his duties if results don’t improve. Should the former Barnsley and Leeds United boss depart, Hibs could turn to Ross.

Sunderland Weekly Injury Update

Midfielder Elliott Embleton could face up to two months on the sidelines. The 20-year-old suffered a hamstring injury in the victory at Sheffield United. Embleton had been hoping to make a good impression at Sunderland this season; however, this injury will put his game time on hold.

Winger Aiden McGeady has missed the last two games due to a foot injury. The Republic of Ireland international is recovering well and should not be out long. This weekends away fixture at Lincoln City is a possible comeback game depending on how much he improves.

Maguire Out of Carabao Cup Game

Fan favourite Chris Maguire is out of the Carabao Cup game at Oxford. Due to yellow cards now being competition specific, his two yellow cards in this seasons competition means he will miss out on a return to his former club. Two yellow cards in the previous rounds means Maguire will be suspended for one game. The suspension is only for the Carabao Cup, meaning he will not miss any league games.

Sunderland Weekly Roundup: Ladies and Academy News

Sunderland Ladies continued their impressive season with a 3-1 victory at Nottingham Forest. Forest took the lead, but by half-time, Sunderland were in front. A third goal in the second-half sealed the victory. The ladies remain undefeated and top of the table.

Sunderland U23 side fell to 4-2 defeat at West Ham United. The Hammers are currently top of the Premier League 2 table. The young Black Cats were three down before pulling a goal back. Another early in the second half gave them hope; however, United scored a fourth to win. The loss leaves Sunderland bottom of the table.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

This edition of the Sunderland Weekly Roundup looks at the latest games, takeover talk and more.
