The past week has, once again, been no exception. In this edition of the Sunderland weekly roundup, Jack Ross finally brought in the left-back he craved, plus, three leave on loan.

This past week also saw an excellent display in the EFL Cup. However, a poor performance and two red cards at Peterborough United brought their undefeated start to the season come to a crashing halt.

Sunderland Weekly Roundup

Cup Victory at Burnley

The Black Cats progressed to the next round of the EFL Cup by defeating Premier League side Burnley. Sunderland road their luck at times at Turf Moor and fell behind to a Jay Rodriguez goal. However, a first goal of the season from Will Grigg levelled the match.

Two early second-half goals from Tom Flanagan and George Dobson completed the victory against a strong Burnley side. The result kept their unbeaten start of the season going. In the next round the Wearsiders will travel to Sheffield United.

Posh End Unbeaten Start

After the impressive performance at Burnley, fans were confident that their team could extend their unbeaten run. Peterborough had different ideas and took full advantage of Sunderland’s poor defending. The home side won 3-0.

The performance was bad enough; however, the Black Cats also finished the game with nine men. Luke O’Nien was shown a straight red card and Charlie Wyke saw red after two bookable offences.

Harsh Red Card Appeal Successful

Sunderland made a formal appeal on Monday to have Luke O’Nien’s red card overturned. O’Nien was seen tussling with Peterborough striker Ivan Toney. The Posh striker went to ground clutching his face; however, replays have shown that O’Nien did not touch Toney’s face, only his chest.

On Tuesday it was confirmed that the red card had been overturned. He will now, if fit, be able to play in the games against Accrington Stanley, Rotherham United, and Bolton Wanderers.

Now Sunderland have won their appeal, then Peterborough striker Toney could face a two-game ban should the FA believe the former Newcastle United man deceived the referee.

Left-Back Signs

Jack Ross’s summer-long search for a left-back ended on transfer deadline day.
Leeds United’s Laurens De Bock completed a season-long loan. He became Ross’s seventh signing of the summer.

De Bock has struggled for games at Elland Road but has made over 200 senior appearances. He will challenge Denver Hume for the left-back position.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Jack Ross said this of his latest signing:
“Getting some competition into our left side has been a priority for a while now. We have had to work hard to get Laurens in because he’s a player that’s got a really good pedigree in terms of Champions League and Europa League experience.

Sunderland Weekly Roundup: Three Leave On Loan

Jack Baldwin left the Stadium of Light on deadline day. The defender joined Football League newcomers Salford City on loan until the end of the season. Baldwin joined Sunderland in 2018 and began his time at the club with a lot of promise. Unfortunately, he began to lose his way, and this season he has fallen out of favour with manager Jack Ross.

Elsewhere, midfielder Ethan Robson has signed for Grimsby Town on loan. Young striker Jack Dimond has also departed on loan. The 19-year-old has joined Harrogate Town until January.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

This weeks edition of the Sunderland weekly roundup looks at the latest Black Cats news.
