Marcus Edwards’ Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> career looks to be drawing to its conclusion. At just 20 years of age, the young attacking winger has had a turbulent time. From being compared by Mauricio Pochettino with Lionel Messi and loan spells of differing success, Edwards has now told the club he needs to move on.<\/p>\n

Whenever the name Marcus Edwards <\/a>has been mentioned, Tottenham fans have become animated. When manager Mauricio Pochettino made those Lionel Messi claims, that animation intensified;<\/p>\n

\u201cHis qualities \u2026 it\u2019s only looks \u2013 his body and the way that he plays \u2013 they make me remember a little bit the beginning of Lionel Messi.\u201d The Independent\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Pochettino later said he \u2018regretted\u2019 the comments as they added too much expectation onto such a young player. Now Edwards has asked to leave to avoid his career falling away completely.<\/p>\n

Loans<\/h3>\n

Marcus Edwards joined Norwich City<\/a> in January 2018 but by April he was back at Tottenham with personal reasons being cited. There were rumours about the player’s attitude and turning up late for training with not so much as an apology.<\/p>\n

Norwich manager Daniel Farke commented on his undoubted talent but also raised concerns with his attitude;<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no doubt that with the ball he is one of our best players,\u201d he began, diplomatically. \u201cBut without it he has to grow up a bit. That was the reason he didn\u2019t play for Tottenham. He needs to be more grown up in his attitude on the pitch and in his behaviour. We cannot carry him.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Parent club Tottenham\u2019s manager had already mentioned concerns in his book \u2018A Brave New World,\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has authority and behavioural problems\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Edwards joined Excelsior<\/a> in August of 2018 and although he put in some eye-catching performances, the club were relegated from the Eredivisie.<\/p>\n

What Now for Marcus Edwards?<\/h3>\n

If no firm offers received, Edwards will depart Tottenham on loan once more. The player, however, wants a permanent move so he can be settled and focus on getting his career back on track. His talent is undoubted but he now needs to show maturity to take that talent and become trusted to make it in the big time.<\/p>\n

If Marcus Edwards doesn\u2019t focus, everything could be all over for him before it even gets started. And football will be the poorer for that.<\/p>\n
