After managing Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic and Crystal Palace, he moved to Birmingham City, There, his reputation grew significantly. He guided the Blues to promotion from the First Division in his first season. The next year, his Birmingham side finished above fierce rivals Aston Villa for the first time since the 1970s.

After four years in the Premier League, Birmingham were relegated, but Bruce’s side bounced back at the first time of asking. The next season, Wigan paid a then world-record fee for a manager to prize him away from St. Andrews. After turning them into a firm Premier League side, he had an unsuccessful spell at Sunderland, sacked in 2011.

A four-year spell at Hull City followed, featuring two promotions from the Championship. He resigned in 2016, unhappy at the lack of transfer dealings. Bruce was unable to return Aston Villa to the Premier League and was sacked after two years. His most recent managerial spell with Sheffield Wednesday lasted just 6 months, resigning following the interest from Newcastle.

A Good Fit For Newcastle?

Steve Bruce is not a name that will have Newcastle fans’ tongues wagging, still bitter about the loss of Rafael Benítez. It is not an appointment that screams ambition either, but rather a desire for security. More recent failures at Aston Villa and Sunderland overshadow his success at Birmingham and Wigan. Recent reports also claim he will become the lowest-paid manager in the Premier League. This, and Newcastle’s unwillingness to match Wednesday’s compensation fee shows this to be a more cheap alternative, rather than a manager to push Newcastle up the table.

He will become the second manager to have been in charge of both Newcastle and rivals Sunderland. This, however, should not tarnish his relationship with the Toon Army, as a Newcastle fan himself. He was close to being appointed as their manager twice in 2004 and 2006. Now, it is third time lucky, for Mike Ashley at least.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Newcastle United have announced that Steve Bruce will become their new manager.
