Barcelona had an opportunity to grab the top spot with a win over Eibar and a Malaga victory, but fate did not appear to be on their side.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the second minute at the Estadio La Roseleda, after a perfect pass from Isco saw him sprint past the defence. CR7 rounded Malaga goalkeeper Carlos Kameni and gave Los Blancos the early advantage that was ultimately a sign of what was to come on the evening. Karim Benzema (55′) doubled the lead in the second half.

A dominant season

Real Madrid and manager Zinedine Zidane displayed strong form throughout much of the 2016-17 campaign, not just in league play but across all competitions also. Los Blancos brought a 40-match unbeaten run with them into 2017 before falling to Sevilla.

An injury to Gareth Bale threatened their title bid, but the immense quality of the side was evident. Ronaldo was at his best as the season wore on in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, and was critical as rivals Barcelona were gaining ground.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO9pReMqTcw

Madrid have not won a league and continental double since the 1950’s and the glory days of Alfredo Di Stefano. But now, the current squad has a chance to be remembered along with some of the club’s all-time bests.

It is Real Madrid’s first La Liga title in five years, and now their sights are firmly set on the Champions League final.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

Real Madrid extended their record for the most La Liga titles on Sunday, defeating Malaga 2-0 to secure their 33rd first-division title.
