Reports in several newspapers, including one from Mark Hendry in the\u00a0Scottish Sun<\/a>, are saying that Sunderland<\/a> have offered a contract to striker Lawrence Shankland. A number of other clubs are also monitoring the player; however, it appears that the Black Cats have made the first move. Shankland is currently out of contract and is available on a free transfer.<\/p>\n

Prolific Striker<\/h2>\n

Scottish hotshot Shankland has been prolific over the last two seasons with Ayr United. His first season at the club saw him score 26 goals in 30 games as United were promoted from the Scottish League One as Champions. He scored a further three goals in other competitions.<\/p>\n

Last season, Shankland continued his impressive form by scoring 24 goals in 31 games as Ayr reached the play-offs. Another ten in other competitions took his tally to 34 for the season. It\u2019s this very impressive form which has saw the 23-year-old become much sought after.<\/p>\n

Lawrence Shankland: Natural Finisher<\/h2>\n

Ayr Advertiser reporter Stewart McConnell<\/a>, who has watched United for many years, believes Shankland is \u201cone of the most exciting players he has seen\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLawrence Shankland is a goal machine and has a natural instinct for finishing,\u201d he said when speaking to the Portsmouth News<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the most exciting players I\u2019ve seen in four decades of watching Ayr. He\u2019s explosive\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt he has very high personal standards and is a very determined player. From 2017 to 2019 he scored 50 (league) goals in 61 (league) appearances. That ratio would\u2019ve been higher if he\u2019d not been injured, too. It\u2019s quite something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sunderland Have Competition For His Signature<\/h2>\n

It appears that Sunderland<\/a> could have plenty of competition for Shankland\u2019s signature if they don\u2019t act fast. Hearts and Rangers are reportedly keen north of the border. In England, Hull City<\/a>, Nottingham Forest<\/a> and Portsmouth<\/a> are monitoring the situation. Should all these clubs make an attempt to sign the striker, Shankland will have a tough decision to make.<\/p>\n

Working with a Scottish manager in Sunderland\u2019s Jack Ross<\/a> and moving not too far from home could sway things in Sunderland\u2019s favour. Their set up which includes an excellent stadium, academy and large fan base will also be in their favour.<\/p>\n
