Diego Godin<\/a> has today announced<\/a> that he is to leave Atletico Madrid<\/a> at the end of the season. He informed the media at a news conference at the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico’s home stadium. The Uruguayan will leave in the summer after more than nine years with the Spanish side.<\/p>\n

A Club Legend<\/h2>\n

Having signed for around \u20ac8 million in 2010, Godin has since made 387 appearances for Atletico. The Uruguayan has been an integral part of their recent success. In his nine years at the club, he has overseen two Europa League triumphs, finished twice as a runner-up in the Champions League and also won the La Liga title in 2013\/14.<\/p>\n

His successes have helped establish himself as a world-class centre-back. He has rejected moves away from Atletico in the past in favour of staying. This includes last summer\u00a0when Manchester United<\/a> were interested in his services. In the press conference on Tuesday, he confirmed he rejected the move<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Press Conference<\/h2>\n

Diego Godin announced his departure to the media via a press conference on Tuesday. He said<\/a>: “These are my last days and matches at Atletico Madrid.<\/p>\n

“I wanted to tell you myself for the love I have for this club and shirt.\u00a0This isn’t just a club for me, it’s always been my family and it’s very hard to say goodbye.”<\/p>\n

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo spoke at the press conference and said: “We aren’t here to say goodbye to a player who is already a legend, but to thank an extraordinary footballer for everything he has given us throughout this nine seasons.”<\/p>\n

Where Next For Diego Godin?<\/h2>\n

According to Ed Maylon of The Independent<\/a>, Godin is expected to be moving to Serie A to join Inter Milan<\/a>. The Uruguayan will join on a two-year deal and become their highest paid player.<\/p>\n

His departure could cause several defences problems for Atletico Madrid. Lucas Hernandez<\/a> is also leaving the Wanda Metropolitano<\/a> to join Bayern Munich<\/a>. As a result, manager Diego Simeone will have to spend money to rejuvenate his defence.<\/p>\n
