Speculation had been gathering pace this week as to whether he would stay or go after the former Manchester United manager had talks with owner Ellis Short and Chief Executive Martin Bain. The Black Cats were relegated last weekend after their 1-0 home defeat by Bournemouth.

After ten consecutive seasons in the Premier League, Sunderland have been relegated with four games remaining and without putting up much of a fight. This caused some to grow frustrated with the manager, and he must win back their faith in the remainder of his time at the club.

David Moyes staying at Sunderland

However, after initial talks, Moyes confirmed that he will stay on Wearside and attempt to bring the club back to the Premier League. Judging by the reaction of fans, Moyes has plenty to do to convince them that he is the right man.

Hope comes and goes

Last season, relegation was once again avoided by producing another great escape. Sam Allardyce had been brought in to replace Dick Advocaat and keep the club in the top flight. After getting the team organised and bringing in some good signings, he succeeded. There was hope around the club that great escapes and battles could be a thing of the past. Then England came calling.

Moyes appointed

Sunderland were once again without a manager and with a new season fast approaching they had to act quickly. Ex-Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes was the man for whom the Black Cats opted. He had had a tough time at United and didn’t fair too well during his time in Spain with Real Sociedad; however, his good work at Everton had many hoping that he would be a good fit at Sunderland.

Questionable signings

Moyes quickly began work on bringing in new players, many of whom he had worked with in the past at United and Everton. He also spent sizeable fees on Papy Djilobodji (£8 million from Chelsea) and Didier N’Dong (£13.6 million from FC Lorient). Sadly, almost all of his signings made little impact. This, along with a sizeable injury list, made the Black Cats a weaker side than they had been in previous seasons.

Team struggles, as predicted

The season, as Moyes had predicted, proved to be a relegation battle. For most of this season, the Black Cats struggled, but after a convincing 4-0 victory away at Crystal Palace in February, a corner looked to have been turned. Unfortunately, it proved to be a false dawn. Their form got worse and any hopes of survival deteriorated. In the ten games after the Palace match, eight games were lost and two drawn.

With relegation confirmed last weekend, thoughts were focusing on how Sunderland would manage in the Championship and if they could come back at the first attempt. Questions were asked as to whether Moyes was the man to bring the club back to the Premier League. He looked deprived of confidence and unable to get his side playing like they could win a football match.

Owner Ellis Short, held talks with the manger to whom he gave a four-year contract only last summer. Moyes refused to comment on his future after the Bournemouth game, with many believing he had doubts as to whether he could continue. Also up for debate was whether Sunderland could actually afford to sack Moyes should they wish too. Today, fans got their answer.

Getting it right is a must

The club must prepare for life in the Championship now. Player recruitment and player departures must be dealt with quickly unlike in previous seasons. Many players are expected to leave and must be replaced by those with the desire and hunger to succeed. Jermain Defoe, Jordan Pickford, Lamine Kòne, Whabi Khazri and Fabio Borini, amongst others, could well leave, as will those out of contract who believe they are better than the Championship. Moyes must also decide whether the current backroom staff, many of whom he inherited, should continue under him.

It will no doubt be a long and difficult summer for Moyes, the club and their long-suffering fans. A host of players and staff will come and go. Many behind the scenes could lose their jobs, too. The latter is a good enough reason as any that the club must get this right, bounce back as soon as possible and do their utmost for a season like this to happen again.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Today it was announced that David Moyes is to stay at Sunderland.
