The explosions occurred before Borussia Dortmund were due to take on Monaco in the Champions League quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, there has only been one minor injury. Marc Bartra has suffered a cut to the hand on broken glass. Whilst he has been hospitalised, he should recover quickly. Police reports suggest the triggering of three separate explosions. This caused the glass windows of the bus to shatter, hence Bartra’s injury. Despite the explosion, police were quickly on the scene to make the area safe. Dortmund\u00a0confirmed this through a club announcement. Fans and locals have calmly vacated the stadium and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n

Both sets of fans reacted positively, as one, to the event. Monaco fans sang chants of “Dortmund! Dortmund!” to show their solidarity with fellow football fans. This kind of togetherness exemplifies the true value of sportsmanship. It is a daunting, yet poignant moment\u00a0forgetting all rivalry and competition.<\/p>\n

Consequences<\/h2>\n

Postponed, the quarter-final will now be played on Wednesday, 12th April 7:45 BST. The tickets of the supporters that travelled still remain valid. This should be an interesting encounter between two top class sides. Strengthening security ahead of the match will be important. It should also reassure fans to attend the game. However, it will be interesting to see if the events impact on tomorrow’s match attendance.<\/p>\n

This is another example of a bomb-related incident in football. The latest notable event was the Euro 2016 explosion <\/a>before the semi-final. At the moment, it is unknown whether connections can be made between any of the bomb incidents to any wider political issues.
