In addition, the players themselves will really benefit from first-team football.

Evaluating Nathan Oduwa and Luke McGee’s Loan

Impact on Tottenham

Oduwa Falls Behind

There will be a very limited impact on the club’s depth, but it is a shame not to see these two youth players in Tottenham colours this season due to their promise.

Oduwa flourished at Rangers, displaying dribbling and attacking intent of the highest quality. However, towards the end of his loan spell, he began to falter. Indeed, he is at risk of falling behind the likes of Cameron Carter–Vickers and Harry Winks. This new loan spell gives a new opportunity for him to prove his worth to Spurs. Furthermore, if he can redeem himself, he adds yet more firepower and spark to the sparkling squad on his return.

McGee Given First Team Football Chance

After his debut in 2014, McGee has shown some promise. He is yet to receive any consistent stint of first-team football. This is because he has mainly served as the understudy to the first team ‘keepers, occupying the third goalkeeper spot. It’s a tricky situation for a manager, for having only two goalkeepers is a big risk, so it compromises the third, often younger goalkeeper’s playing time.

Whilst Oduwa and McGee may have potentially featured, there are ample replacements. For example, Tottenham’s deadline day loan signing of Pau Lopez ensures that both Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm are backed up. In addition, as a winger, Oduwa’s chances are slim, due to new signing Georges–Kévin N’Koudou who completes a plethora of fantastic wide players.

Impact on Peterborough United

McGee’s Loan and Departure of Alnwick and Henry

After the departure of Ben Alnwick, the void has been filled by McGee’s loan to the League One outfit. Whilst Mark Tyler will undoubtedly start in most matches, McGee should definitely see some match time. This is because of the back injury Tyler sustained last season, which may limit his own playing time.

By loaning out young goalkeeper Dion-Curtis Henry, the club has made a good decision. This is because by comparing Henry and McGee, it is clear that Henry is inferior in terms of experience and ability. Therefore, the club solves the goalkeeping crisis with this signing.

Oduwa Has Point To Prove

Oduwa will bring his pace and energy to revitalise the Peterborough squad. His audacious skills should impress the Posh fans. However, he needs to build on his previous loan spells because League One is a tough league. So far, his career heights have reached English League Two and the Scottish Championship. It is a clear step up to League One, which leaves the success of the transfer in the balance.

It’s important that he doesn’t lose any of his skillful identity in this physical league. However, it is more important that his final product remains strong. A piece of great skill followed by a shot bundled into Row-Z is ultimately worthless. But, if he works hard, utilises the experience and quality around him, he should play an important role for Peterborough.

In the pursuit of promotion, it is his skillful ingenuity that could fire the club into the Championship. Furthermore, he will link up well with Shaquile Coulthirst, a former Spurs team-mate. Rekindling this partnership could allow for plenty of excitement and goals.

main photo

Embed from Getty Images

Nathan Oduwa and Luke McGee’s loan to Peterborough United is a shrewd move for both clubs.
