With the transfer window now closed, Klopp has decided to stick with his trusted formula. Astute transfer business coupled with a streamlined squad historically suit the <\/span><b>German<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coach. One major question on many <\/span><b>Reds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fans&#8217; and <\/span><b>Premier League<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pundits&#8217; minds looms large. Can the Dortmund model successfully transfer into the <\/span><b>English<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> top flight? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend Much or Spend Astutely?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, the top four clubs in the Premier League spend largely each season. <\/span><b>Ars\u00e8ne Wenger,\u00a0<\/b>traditionally seen as overly-frugal<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has just spent around \u00a380million<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/football\/article-3760563\/Arsenal-bust-myth-not-spending-Arsene-Wenger-splurges-50million-Shkodran-Mustafi-Lucas-Perez.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>on\u00a0<\/span><b>Shkodran Mustafi, Granit Xhaka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <\/span><b>Lucas Perez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <strong>Leicester City,<\/strong> traditionally modest spenders, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leicestermercury.co.uk\/have-leicester-city-done-enough-in-the-transfer-window\/story-29675970-detail\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now rank fifth in Premier League incoming transfer spending<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two <strong>Manchester<\/strong> clubs have invested almost \u00a3340million combined in new signings. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is clearly evident that English clubs who qualify for Champions League slots are under immense pressure to spend freely in order to retain that status. Similarly, the clubs who finish close to the Champions League positions spend freely. Klopp\u2019s determined deviation from the pressure to spend freely is commendable, and similarities with his Dortmund tenure cannot be ignored. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dortmund Mirror<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Dortmund, Klopp took a traditional but struggling Bundesliga<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">power back to the top. In doing so, an important part of the blueprint was his transfer dealings. Super expensive signings were the exclusive domain of <\/span><b>Bayern Munich <\/b>in 2008.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The <strong>Bavarian<\/strong> superpower financially dwarfed all others at the time of Klopp&#8217;s arrival. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Klopp boldy acquired a young Bayern Munich centre-back on loan. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/2015\/10\/assessing-jurgen-klopps-standout-transfers-dortmund\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mats Hummels<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would later join Dortmund permanently for under \u00a33million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Joel Matip,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> another highly-rated young centre-back, is one of the first bargain signings Klopp has made as Liverpool boss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0130lkay G\u00fcndo\u011fan, <\/strong><b>Robert Lewandowski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <strong>Neven Suboti\u0107<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0all cost around \u00a312million combined. <\/span><b>Marko Gruji\u0107<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Loris Karius<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Ragnar Klavan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cost Liverpool under \u00a315million combined. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Marco Reus,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the jet-heeled winger\/forward was purchased by Dortmund at a price of almost \u00a312million. He was one of Klopp\u2019s more expensive purchases, but he helped enhance the manager&#8217;s signature <strong>Gegenpressing<\/strong> system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarities between Reus and\u00a0<\/span><b>Sadio Man\u00e9\u00a0<\/b>are prominent.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Both are pacey wingers\/forwards and offer a potent direct threat on the counterattack; both have terrific work rates while pressing the opposition. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A different league<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarities in Klopp\u2019s blueprint for Dortmund and his early scheming at Liverpool are obvious. As Liverpool manager, building the squad is under his total control. He seems comfortable in executing his plans despite the pressures of a new challenge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Premier League is a much different proposition to the Bundesliga. In Germany, the superpower is Bayern Munich. They are the solitary benchmark. Any German club who can compete with Bayern will finish first or second in the league the vast majority of the time. Klopp\u2019s Dortmund managed not only to compete with them, they won the league on two occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Manchester City<\/strong>, Chelsea, <strong>Manchester United<\/strong>, and Arsenal are the Premier League era&#8217;s\u00a0dominant teams. Liverpool traditionally belong in that elite group. However, one Champions League qualification since the turn of this decade has relegated them to the chasing\u00a0pack. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liverpool compete directly with <strong>Tottenham Hotspur<\/strong>, <strong>Everton<\/strong>, West Ham, current champions Leicester and <strong>Southampton<\/strong>. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his ultra-competitive top eight or nine will make it much harder to succeed. Will the ultra-competitive nature of the Premier League eventually force the Reds coach into massive spending? This season, with a net profit after the transfer window, Klopp\u2019s methods will face stringent scrutiny.
