Jose Mourinho has been sacked as the manager of Manchester United<\/a>. The dismissal comes two days after their 3-1 defeat to rivals Liverpool<\/a> after Xherdan Shaqiri’s late double sank the Red Devils. The official club statement was announced on the Manchester United website earlier today on 18 December 2018.<\/p>\n

Disappointment<\/h2>\n

The Portuguese manager has been sacked after a very disappointing start of the season with United, seeing them in sixth place in the Premier League, 19 points behind current leaders Liverpool.<\/p>\n

‘The Special One\u2019 and his team also disappointed fans with an early exit from the Carabao Cup against Frank Lampard’s Derby County and rumours about Mourinho leaving the club have been around for months.<\/p>\n

The statement made by the club said” “A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.” There is huge speculation on who the next United manager would be. The likes of Zinedine Zidane and Luis Enrique to ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers are all being rumoured.<\/p>\n

Michael Carrick to Take Temporary Charge?<\/h2>\n

Michael Carrick worked together with Jose Mourinho as assistant manager and has always said he is willing to eventually be a manager in his own right. The experienced 37-year-old is most likely to take over as United\u2019s boss on a temporary basis until the club finds a new full-time manager, although reports later in the day have also suggested that Laurent Blanc was the first name on United’s list for an interim boss.<\/p>\n

Without a doubt, Manchester United are currently in a very tough and challenging position. Mourinho has set some disappointing records for the team. This season, the Red Devils have the worst win percentage in a season at Old Trafford in the Premier League era. Additionally, they have their worst points haul after 17 Premier League games since the 1990\/91 season, conceding more Premier League goals than in the entire 2017\/18 season.<\/p>\n
