This column delves deep into the world of the Football League, looking at the key games from each of the three divisions as well as providing a brief overview of every result from the Championship, League One and League Two.

With no Championship action this week, we look at the action from League One and League Two. Peterborough are back on track following a hard-fought victory, Notts County manager Harry Kewell endured a nightmare start and the Shakers thumped the Mariners.

EFL Round-Up – Gameweek 7

Posh Back On Track

After their 100% start to the season ended last weekend, Peterborough United are now back to winning ways following a 3-2 win at Southend United.

Matthew Godden made it 1-0 to Posh in the 32nd minute. Then eleven minutes after the break, Godden doubled his and Posh’s tally to make it 2-0, scoring his sixth of the season in the 56th minute.

But just eight minutes later, Southend were back in the game thanks to a Tom Hopper goal, making it 2-1. Then with just over fifteen minutes to play, the home side completed the comeback as Stephen McLaughlin equalized for the Shrimps.

However, all of Southend’s hard work came undone, courtesy of an 87th-minute winner from Ivan Toney, who came off the bench to make it six wins from seven for Steve Evans’ side.

Notts County’s Nightmare in Devon

Harry Kewell’s first league game in charge of Notts County was far from ideal. The Australian former Liverpool and Leeds player was sent to stands as his side were thrashed 5-1 by high-flying Exeter City.

Pierce Sweeney opened the floodgates, making it 1-0 to Exeter in the 17th minute. Just two minutes later, Jayden Stockley doubled the Grecians’ lead to make it 2-0. However, just on the stroke of half-time, Enzio Boldewijn pulled on back for the visitors, reducing the deficit to one.

A minute before the hour-mark, Sweeney scored his second, restoring Exeter’s two-goal cushion, making it 3-1. Then in the 74th minute, Stockley netted his second of the game to give Exeter a 4-1 lead. Finally, in stoppage time, Aaron Martin wrapped up the game for the Devon side, with the defender finishing off the game at 5-1.

Shakers’ Delight

Despite Bury’s slow start to the season, they enjoyed themselves in front of goal this week as they thumped Grimsby Town 4-0 at Gigg Lane.

Danny Mayor handed the Shakers a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, then twenty minutes later Will Aimson added a second to make it 2-0 to Bury. Summer signing Chris Dagnall made it 3-0, scoring in the 63rd minute, then Mayor scored his second and Bury’s fourth, to give Ryan Lowe’s side a 4-0 win.

The win sees Bury move up to 13th whereas Grimsby Town sit 21st.

Elsewhere in…

League One

Accrington Stanley drew 1-1 with Burton Albion in the Lancashire derby. Scott Fraser’s early goal for the Brewers was cancelled out by a late equalizer from the spot by Billy Kee in the 84th minute.

High-flying Barnsley were held to a late draw at home to Walsall. Victor Adeboyejo’s 55th-minute goal for the Tykes could only earn them a point, with Andy Cook levelling the game for the Saddlers in the 88th minute.

A remarkable Blackpool comeback inside the last seven minutes saw them beat Bradford City 3-2 at Bloomfield Road. Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle played out a goalless draw at the Memorial.

Charlton Athletic saw off a determined Wycombe Wanderers side. The Addicks recorded a 3-2 victory at the Valley in Lee Bowyer’s first game in charge since being appointed as manager on a full-time basis.

Luton Town’s tough start to League One continued as they lost 2-1 away to Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat while Joe Pigott’s 53rd-minute winner handed all three points to AFC Wimbledon, who beat Gillingham 1-0 on their travels.

A late penalty from Brett Pitman earned a point for Portsmouth, who held Shrewsbury Town to a 1-1 draw. At Glanford Park Scunthorpe United and Rochdale drew 3-3. Despite being 2-0 at half-time, the Iron were pinned back three times, with the Dale getting a hard-earned point.

Sunderland drew 1-1 at home to former Newcastle United player Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town side.

Finally, on Sunday, more pressure was inflicted on Oxford United boss Karl Robinson, with his side losing 2-1 at home to Coventry City.

League Two

Carlisle United came from behind to beat Cambridge United 2-1, rewarding their travelling supporters with three points home for the long journey. Ten-man Forest Green Rovers were held to 1-1 draw with Port Vale. Farrend Rawson saw a straight red in the 76th minute after a nasty challenge on Mitch Clark.

Crawley Town provided perhaps the surprise result of the day, beating Lincoln City 1-0 away from home. A Michael Bostwick own-goal was enough for the Sussex club to hold on and take all three points.

Swindon Town were successful on the road as Phil Brown’s side beat Morecambe 1-0 courtesy of Elijah Adebayo’s 26th-minute winner. There was more misery for Northampton Town, who were beaten 3-1 by Cheltenham Town at Sixfields.

Newport County continued their fine form thanks to a Tyreeq Bakinson goal, giving the Exiles a 1-0 against Oldham Athletic. Danny Newton’s 41st minute goal was enough to give Stevenage the win, as they beat Macclesfield Town 1-0.

Tranmere Rovers preserved their unbeaten home start but were held 1-1 against Colchester United at Prenton Park.

Stats You May Have Missed

Newport County are currently boasting a 100% home record, winning 3 out of 3 matches at Rodney Parade.

Crewe Alexandra are yet to concede a goal at home so far this season.

Peterborough United have scored the most goals of any EFL side, scoring 19 goals.

Notts County have conceded the most goals of any side in the EFL, conceding 21 goals.

Alongside QPR, Morecambe and Coventry City have only scored three league goals, the least of any EFL sides.

All stats from FootyStats

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Welcome back to EFL Round-Up by Last Word on Football.
