Jurrien Timber: Dutch International Defender on Verge of Signing a New Contract With Ajax
Manchester United Target Set to Remain in the Eredivisie
Timber seemed certain to follow Lisandro Martinez to Old Trafford but the rumours around a potential deal have quietened in recent weeks. Timber, at only 21-year-old, has already shown his quality and spending another year in the Eredivisie with Champions League football has seemingly convinced the Dutch defender that his immediate future lies with Ajax.
Anyone that watched the Dutchman this season would not have been surprised to see a plethora of clubs linked with him, including Manchester United. The 21-year-old has enjoyed an impressive campaign, making 43 appearances in all competitions.
The Dutchman offers flexibility in being able to play on either side as a full-back, with his most impressive form coming at right-back or centre-back. Erik ten Hag will be fully aware of the qualities Timber brings having managed him at Ajax.
A Frustrating Summer for Manchester United
It’s been a largely frustrating summer for Manchester United, with their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong not yet materialising into a transfer. The Red Devils moved quickly to sign Martinez from Ajax once his move to Premier League rivals Arsenal stalled.
The club have also signed Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia but Timber’s class and versatility has undoubtedly made him a key target for Ten Hag as the Dutch manager embarks on his mission to revitalise Manchester United.
There was a defensive frailty at Old Trafford last season which has not been seen in a long time, so it was clear they needed to improve the back line. While he has done with the signings so far, but bringing in a player with such a large ceiling as Timber would be a great coup for the Red Devils.
