Atletico Madrid Open Talks for Rodrigo de Paul

De Paul

With many clubs reportedly in the race to sign the midfielder, it looks as though Atletico Madrid have taken to the lead to secure Rodrigo de Paul. According to Fabrizio Romano, the La Liga champions have offered €20 million plus players on top of that offer in an attempt to match Udinese’s €40 million price tag.

The deal will be a difficult one to secure, when considering the list of clubs seeking the midfielder. Yet, the offer of players on top of the of the price may attract Udinese. After all, the Italian club will want to replace de Paul if he leaves. And what better way to replace him by swapping him with a La Liga champion?

Midfielder Could take Atletico Madrid to a New Level

After securing the La Liga title, not many will believe that Atletico can upgrade any further. Yet, the signing of de Paul would see Diego Simeone’s side rise even more as Real Madrid and Barcelona enter a transitional period. Now would be the perfect time to act and improve the squad.

Top teams stay at the summit by transitioning each summer; just look at Manchester City and even Barcelona under Pep Guardiola. Now it’s time for Atletico to follow suit. At 27, de Paul is just about at the peak of his powers, as proven in the Serie A this season. The Argentine midfielder scored nine goals and registered 11 assists this season.

Those are numbers every midfielder would be proud of. The only issue with the deal could be Simeone’s playing style. A player of de Paul’s offensive ability would thrive in attacking systems. Unfortunately, Atletico Madrid play the opposite of an attacking system; a system that Joao Felix has struggled in.

De Paul may look at Felix as an example of why not to move to the La Liga champions.
