Antonio Conte Leaves Inter Milan

Inter Milan have parted ways with manager Antonio Conte despite the former Chelsea manager leading the club to its first Serie A title for 11 years.

Italian journalist and reporter Fabrizio Romano has detailed that a €7 million settlement has been reached between the club and Conte, allowing him to leave with immediate effect.

Manager and Board Clashed Over Plans for the Future

The prospect of Conte leaving Inter Milan just weeks after helping the club end Juventus‘ nine-year stranglehold of the Serie A title seemed absurd until recent days.

However, it has since emerged that the 51-year-old disagreed heavily with club directors over how Inter should proceed after securing their first Scudetto since 2010.

The club’s board are thought to be planning on selling one or two of their most valuable players in order to direct the immediate focus towards developing youth as well as lessening the ongoing financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Conte, meanwhile, feels that Inter should keep the current core of the team together in order to maximise its current level of performance in the coming seasons.

With no room for compromise between the two contrasting ideals, Conte is leaving the club 12 months before his contract was initially due to expire.

Inter Milan Could Turn to Massimiliano Allegri to Replace Conte

In hiring Antonio Conte as the club’s manager in May 2019, Inter were looking to a former Juventus manager to help lead them back to the top of Italian football.

They could do the same again this summer, with former Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri reportedly among their leading candidates to replace Conte.

Allegri has surprisingly remained out of work since leaving Juventus in June 2019, shortly after Conte’s appointment by Inter. Also under consideration is Simone Inzaghi, who is currently in charge at fellow Serie A side Lazio but is expected to depart upon the expiry of his contract next month.
