Free Agent Sokratis Set to Join Olympiacos

Sokratis Olympiacos

After terminating his contract by mutual consent at Arsenal, Sokratis is on the hunt for a new club with a move back to his homeland on the cards. According to The Athletic, the 32-year-old is set to join Greek side Olympiacos, who knocked Arsenal out of the Europa League last season, this month.

The news comes with Olympiacos 11 points clear at the top of the Greek Super League. Sokratis’ reported arrival will only strengthen their grip on the title, too.

Liverpool Contact

With Liverpool’s need for a central defender growing by the week as their form dwindles, Sokratis was reportedly explored as a potential option this month.

According to The Athletic, the Premier League champions made contact with the former Borussia Dortmund man, but talks failed to mount to anything.

Having worked with Jurgen Klopp during his Dortmund days, Liverpool would have been an attractable offer for Sokratis. Ultimately, however, Liverpool opted not to pursue any deal for the Greek defender.

So, as it stands, a return to Greece is on the cards where the chance to win trophies is there in abundance. Following a rather turbulent spell at the Emirates, too, the chance to get back on track at Olympiakos will please Sokratis should a move come into fruition.

Part of the Arsenal Clear Out

Alongside Mesut Ozil, Sokratis fell victim to Mikel Arteta’s brutal, but desperately needed clearing of deadwood.

The central defender’s services were no longer needed at the Emirates. Instead, the funds gained by clearing Sokratis from the wage bill were. Now, with that extra money, Arsenal look set to sign Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid after already sealing a deal for Brighton’s Mat Ryan.

Arsenal needed a clear out; Sokratis needed a move, and now Olympiacos reportedly awaits.
