Portsmouth COVID

Following positive COVID-19 tests within the Portsmouth squad, the club has informed the EFL that they will be unable to fulfil the next two League One fixtures against Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.

The news deals the league another blow, which has been disrupted by several cases of COVID-19 in the division. With the lack of control on containing the virus within the division becoming increasingly apparent, action may need to be taken on its continuation.

EFL Statement

Following the news of Portsmouth’s positive cases of COVID-19, the EFL released a statement saying: “The club informed the EFL that they would be unable to fulfil the fixtures following recent positive COVID-19 tests and the requirements for players and staff to self-isolate as per EFL and government guidance in order to mitigate against the risk of further infection.

“The circumstances surrounding the postponements will now be subject of an investigation in accordance with EFL regulations. Revised dates for the rearranged fixtures will be confirmed in due course.”

Portsmouth Statement

Portsmouth also released a statement, confirming the positive COVID-19 cases, saying: “Portsmouth Football Club can confirm that five members of the playing and backroom staff have tested positive for Covid-19.

“This figure includes the three players who took ‘rapid’ tests at the weekend after developing symptoms, which came back positive.

All of those who have tested positive – or come into close contact with those who have – are now self-isolating in accordance with government guidelines.

“We wish all those who have been affected by this terrible virus a speedy recovery and our best wishes go out to them.”

The hope from a Portsmouth point of view will be that this does not do any damage to their season as they seek promotion to the Championship.
