Union Berlin Hold Bundesliga Leaders Bayern Munich

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich were held on the road by this seasons surprise package, Union Berlin.

For Union, it was a vital point as they looked to continue their strong start to the season which was halted on the previous matchday against rivals Hertha.

Union Berlin Pick up Point Against Bayern Munich

Strong Performance From Union Berlin Against Bundesliga Leaders

With several absentees, including in-form forward Max Kruse and Robert Andrich through injury and suspension respectively, it could have been a big ask for Union Berlin.

However, it turned out to be a resilient and disciplined display from Urs Fischer’s side. Union could have taken the lead inside the opening minute but Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi was denied by Manuel Neuer.

But just two minutes later and the hosts took the lead. Grischa Prömel headed past the German number one from a corner to give Die Eisernen a deserved early advantage.

Awoniyi was presented with another one-on-one with Neuer. Despite beating the goalkeeper, his shot sailed just past the post.

Serge Gnabry forced Andreas Luthe into two saves before the break but Union would have been pleased with their first-half display.

Bayern Fight Back

Luthe was inspired in the second half as the visitors turned up the tempo. The goalkeeper denied Thomas Müller and Benjamin Pavard but was unable to keep out Robert Lewandowski when the Polish international smashed home his 175th Bayern goal in his 200th Bundesliga match.

Keita Endo and Marvin Friedrich were also denied by Neuer before Luthe kept out Leroy Sané late on to earn Union a point.

Upcoming Fixtures for Union Berlin

Picking up a point against Bayern could be hugely important given their upcoming games. Union travel to Stuttgart on Tuesday night with both sides level on 17 points.

Die Eisernen follow that with a home visit of Borussia Dortmund before DFB-Pokal action against Paderborn.
