Chelsea will need to pay £30 million for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy according to reports from Mike McGrath of the Telegraph.

Frank Lampard reportedly sees the 28-year-old goalkeeper as the ideal replacement for current Chelsea stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea Quoted £30 Million for Edouard Mendy

Second Bid for Mendy

The £30 million asking price from Stade Rennais comes after the first bid from Chelsea was reportedly turned down by the Ligue 1 club recently.

Rennes appear to be holding out for an improved fee for Mendy. The French side sees him as a prime age for a goalkeeper, with the potential to still perform in the Premier League so they are hoping to make a profit on the Senegalese international.

Rennes signed Mendy from Stade de Reims for an undisclosed fee in August 2019. He made 33 appearances in all competitions for Rennes last season and kept 13 clean sheets. He has also represented Senegal on two occasions.

Competition for Kepa

Lampard reportedly wants to sign Mendy to compete with Chelsea’s current number one, Kepa. The Spaniard arrived for an estimated £72 million from Atletico Bilbao in August 2018 and remains the most expensive goalkeeper in transfer history.

Kepa’s form dipped last season. A number of high-profile mistakes and a poor save ratio cost the 25-year-old keeper his place towards the end of last season. Second choice veteran keeper Willy Caballero came in for the final matches of the 2019/20 campaign.

Despite the links with Mendy, Kepa apparently wants to stay at Chelsea. The club also still sees the Spaniard as their first-choice keeper.

Despite his poor form last season, Chelsea would suffer financially if they were to sell Kepa. Therefore, the Blues are keen to keep the 25-year-old next season.

Kepa played 41 games for Chelsea last season and conceded 58 goals in all competitions and kept just 10 clean sheets.
