According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are said to be stunned by Eric Dier’s wage demands. He has one year left on his current £60,000 a week deal, and wants more than double his current salary.
The player feels like this salary increase will bring him in line with what others in the squad are getting. However, the Tottenham hierarchy believes this is now unrealistic due to COVID-19 financial uncertainties.
The player is currently serving a four-match ban for climbing into the stands and confronting a fan after Spurs were knocked out of the FA Cup by Norwich City in March.

Relationship With Jose Mourinho
Despite his demands, the 26-year-old is happy at the club and wants to stay. This is down to the good relationship he has with manager Jose Mourinho.
After playing a bit-part role during Mauricio Pochettino’s final few months, he has become somewhat of a first-team regular under the Portuguese manager.
He has played 15 Premier League games since the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager joined the club. He has also made the centre-back spot his own in 2020. This is compared to just three league appearances in Pochettino’s final few games.
Dier has also previously spoken about how it is special to have Mourinho at the club. After a game against Burnley in December, Dier spoke to the media about his new manager.
“We have spoken a lot, both in English and Portuguese! His mentality appeals to me and it is very special.
“Having grown up in Portugal to go from what he was doing at the time to now be playing under him is very special.
“I was a kid at the time but he was a very big thing so it is special to be working for him.
“It is natural that we have that connection but it is nothing more than that and up to me to perform. I know that if I do perform like I know I can, I will be able to play.”
Replacements if a Deal Cannot be Agreed
A further report by the Daily Mail in February suggested that Tottenham may sell the player this summer if he did not commit to a new deal. Although he wants to stay at the club, could the steep rise in wages stop Tottenham from keeping him?
If this is the case, there is a similar player who is likely to leave his clubs who could come in to replace him.
If West Ham United get relegated, they will most likely be forced to sell Declan Rice. Rice and Dier are similar players and can both play in holding midfield and centre-back. Although it might be difficult to see West Ham and Tottenham doing a deal, if they get relegated they may have no choice but to come up with a deal to sell the player.
