New Lease of Attacking Life

Tottenham’s dismal campaign began to fizzle out over the final few weeks before the season’s suspension. An influx of attacking injuries to Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn has left Spurs with minimal options, but the postponement of the Premier League due to the Coronavirus pandemic may give Spurs time to plan ahead.

The London club have maintained an interest in starlet Osimhen, who has impressed in his debut season for Lille. In what has been a premature halt to the season, the Nigeria international has found the back of the net on 18 occasions in 38 appearances and has chipped in with a further six assists.

It comes as no surprise that Tottenham have maintained an interest in Osimhen. Spurs’ current forward line has been hit extremely hard on the injury front. The long-term layoff for Harry Kane particularly dented Spurs’ ability to impose themselves on the front foot. Kane’s ability to hold the ball up and spread the play is key to Tottenham’s play-style. Osimhen has won an average of 4.4 aerial duels per game, and as such may be a suitable option to adapt to the Premier League’s physicality.

Reinforcement at a Hefty Price

When becoming the Spurs boss, Jose Mourinho quickly expressed his interest in acquiring Osimhen in the January transfer window, according to a Jeunesfooteux report. However, Spurs turned to Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn, who became the lone forward signing of the January window.

Le10Sport report that Lille will only entertain selling Osimhen if an offer eclipses the club’s most expensive departure. Arsenal acquired the services of Ivorian winger Nicolas Pepe over the summer, sending £72 million Lille’s way. The French side’s awareness of Premier League sides’ willingness to break the bank has left an expectation for Osimhen to leave as the club’s most expensive departure ahead of Pepe.
