League Two side Macclesfield Town have confirmed that manager Sol Campbell has left the club by mutual consent. Campbell had been in charge of the Silkmen for eight months and miraculously guided them to safety in League Two last season.
Sol Campbell Departs Macclesfield Town
Good Start to the Season
Given Macclesfield’s start to the season, it seems odd that performances would be anything to do with Campbell’s departure. They were beaten by a late Exeter City goal on the opening day but bounced back to beat Leyton Orient 3-0 and knock Blackpool out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.
It was, however, confirmed yesterday that a petition lodged against the club by a number of former players had been dismissed in the High Court. Shamir Mullings, Elliott Durrell, Rhys Taylor, Jamie Grimes, Ryan Lloyd and Keith Lowe were all appealing to receive unpaid wages, something which the club say they are sorry for not doing at the time.
Whether or not this is linked to Campbell leaving is currently unknown, but with Macclesfield still in some financial difficulty, it seems likely that the club will want to cut as many costs as possible. Having a former Arsenal and England defender on the books can’t have been cheap.
What Was Said
In a statement posted on the club’s website, Campbell said:
“Macclesfield Town provided me with a great beginning in the managerial side of the game, as well as a fantastic learning curve which I am truly grateful for.
“I would like to thank all the players and staff for their support during my time at the Moss Rose and also all the loyal fans, whose belief at the end of last season ultimately played a tangible role in our success.”
The club say the search for a new manager has already begun.
