Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur much to the delight of fans. The deal will keep him at the club until 2023. The popular Argentinian manager joined at the North London Club from Southampton in 2014. His first-team coaching staff have also agreed terms.
Mauricio Pochettino Signs Five-Year Deal With Spurs
Since his arrival Mauricio Pochettino has turned the club around, bringing them nearer the higher level set by fellow London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea. Three top-three finishes in as many seasons may not be considered a trophy by their neighbours, but to fans it is unprecedented.
Though there have been bitter disappointments in the FA Cup and, more notably, the Champions League, the overall improvement is undeniable. Spurs are now at least able to challenge for the league and Champions League title.
Could It Be Magic?
A consistent, higher level of play moulded by a trusted leader. Neither of which long-suffering fans have enjoyed for a very long time. Therefore making today’s news music to Spurs fans, players and club’s ears.
Not since the days of Keith Burkenshaw have Tottenham had such a successful or revered leader. His ’magician’ tag is fairly earned, considering the budget and weapons given. He is much acclaimed for the transformations of key players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli. Successful signings have also fuelled the new fire that burns underneath the Lillywhite ranks.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said of his manager;
“Mauricio has fostered an incredible spirit in the team and has embraced a style of play our fans have loved watching. I know they will welcome this commitment by Mauricio.”
With the new stadium changing the North London skyline both physically and metaphorically, a leadership change now would have been disastrous. Following worrying comments from Pochettino recently about his future at Spurs, the huge sigh of relief over North London is almost audible.
Between the printed headlines fans will read the deal is perhaps an answer to the questions asked by Pochettino to Levy. Does the five-year-deal signify the manager has been given the green light to do things his way? By ”taking risks”?
Ledley King: ”He does seem to have a presence about him.”
One ex-captain of Spurs and England will be equally rejoicing the news. Ledley King recently shared exclusively to LWOF and 7OTB his thoughts on Mauricio Pochettino. We asked what type of man and manager he was. What was he like? He replied:
”He does seem to have a presence about him. On one hand, he’s a bit of a ‘Harry’ (Redknapp). Yes, I think he has a great balance. He is someone that can put an arm around the players, have a joke and a laugh with them. Then, when it’s time to work it’s time to work, and as a player, that’s what you need.”
He continued ”Yes, that’s what’s most important, that you have a manager that believes in the young player. You could have the best young players in the world, but if you don’t have a manager that’s going to give them an opportunity, they’ll never get a chance.
“We now have a manager that wants them to do well, and he will reward them. You’ve seen what’s happened with Harry Winks, and even Dele Alli. When he signed from MK Dons, the manager had trust in his ability and put him right in there, and look what he’s gone on achieved in such a short space of time.
“He’s a manager that allows a player to flourish, so there’s not always a need to go abroad looking for players if they’re already on your doorstep.”
Et Tu, Toby?
The news has also dwarfed and cushioned the somewhat expected unconfirmed reports that Manchester United have opened talks with Toby Alderweireld. The story was broken today by Mirror Sport, though already circulating in the transfer rumour mill.
Fans will now be hoping that today’s deal will mean a continuation of the long-awaited comeback for the once mighty Spurs. Hoping they can liven up to both motto ’To Dare is to Do’ and the gargantuan ’Watch Us Rise’ banner adorning their growing new arena.
