After a historic victory over South Africa in South Africa in the ODI series, Bangladesh now take on the Proteas in a two-match Test series starting on 31st March 2022 with Tests to be played at Kingsmead, Durban and St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth. So we here at LWOC are looking back at the statistical history of South Africa vs Bangladesh in Test matches.

The two teams have faced each other 12 times in Test matches, with South Africa leading Bangladesh 10-0. Two of their matches ended in a draw. This is Bangladesh’s fourth tour of South Africa and, so far, they have never even managed a draw against the Proteas in South Africa. The previous three tours were also two match Test series. Bangladesh’s first draw against South Africa was earned in 2015 when the Proteas toured Bangladesh.

The upcoming Test series is also a part of the ICC World Test Championship in which South Africa are well-placed after some fine results, Bangladesh rather less so. Before the start of their latest series let us look at some of the key stats of these two teams in Test matches.

  • Smith also has the highest individual score. He scored 232 in 2008.
  • 19 centuries have been scored in South Africa-Bangladesh Test matches which also includes four double centuries.
  • Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith have scored the most number of centuries in matches between these two teams – three.
  • Dean Elgar has scored the most number of runs in a particular South Africa-Bangladesh Test series. He scored 330 runs in Bangladesh tour of  South Africa Test Series, 2017/18.
  • 420 runs partnership between Jacques Rudolph and Boeta Dippenaar is the highest partnership for any wicket in matches between these two teams.

  • Makhaya Ntini has taken the most number of wickets in South Africa vs Bangladesh Test matches with a total of 35 wickets.
  • 6/27 taken by Shahadat Hossain of Bangladesh in 2008 remains the best bowling figure in an innings in matches between the two teams.
  • 10/63 by Kagiso Rabada of South Africa in 2017 is the best bowling figure in a match.
  • 15 five-wicket hauls have been taken in an innings in matches between the two teams.
  • Paul Adams, Kagiso Rabada, Jacques Kallis and Shakib Al Hasan have taken the most number of five-wicket hauls in an innings with two apiece.
  • Adams and Rabada are also the only two players to take 10 wickets in a match.
  • Rabada has taken the most number of wickets in a particular South Africa-Bangladesh Test series. He took 15 wickets in Bangladesh tour of  South Africa Test Series, 2017/18.

  • Pollock also has taken the most number of catches in a particular South Africa-Bangladesh Test series – five in the South African tour of Bangladesh in 2003.
